whats a good technique for creating flames?
what the title says. im creating a skin for a car and wondering whats a good way of creating flames, or even better lightning type effects?
Usually the best way to create flames is to start a thread about NAWZ, NEONS, and SPINNAZ!1.

I have no useful advice... sorry...
lol ^^ ive finnaly worked out how to do lighting. but only in black and white. how do i do it other colours? when i invert they change, i just want the primary colour to be the lighting not the background

You son-of-a........ As soon as I saw that title before I clicked it, I thought "start a thread about nawz, neons, or spinners" LOL.
There are a load of good flame brushes available for Photoshop, but you do need to actually think about flames when using them. If you're not using Photoshop then I can't really help.

You want a decent mix of reds, yellows and oranges, with a few layers of white over the top, maybe even a light blue around the edges. Gradient fills on some of them, a lot of them should be low opacity.
It's hard to get them looking realistic though, and it might be easier to try and download some actual completed flame graphics, then just C&P them over.
Clear this up, how do you mean flames?

Something like this?

Or more realistic ones like this?

The first design you could create in photoshop by simple making a selection with the Lasso tool and then either fill or stroke to give the flame shape. For better results the pen tool would be best but then pen tool requires some practice and getting used to.

The second design, I can't help you with as I have never tried to make flames in photoshop. Best guess would be a google search for a tutorial.
if it is the realistic flames your after you could try a set of photoshop brushes just google them. Here is a set i found they're not the best but they shoud work

and if it is the hot rod style flames then get a tutorial on how to use the pen tool and trace some flames off of pictures to get a feel for how to draw them then just make your own.

all of this depends on weather or not you have Photoshop though

Edit: oops Dajmin already said about brushes
Using the photoshop brushes from the post above here is what I came up with today in the flame department.

Here are a couple I did with some C/P and a little free hand.

Why can't I put the images directly in the thread?

Thats weird. If I view this thread with firefox I just see the links but in IE I see the pics.
I see the pics in Opera and Firefox
I have some flames for the fzr, if you want them let me know.
