Spoiler - click to revealThe historic win at Westhill by Jakg and the UKCT team was the opening shot by the new boys intent on upsetting the old established order. In the very next race, the old guard were to make a final, defiant stance. The venue was the 5.5 miles of 'green hell' of the Fern Bay Black and the commander of the old guard himself, SamH, was to fire the parting shot.

The pressing question before the race was whether to run a non-stop race or make a pit stop. Ferrari, in the guise of Hawthorn, Collins and Musso elected for a non-stop effort while the Maserati team of Fangio and Behra opted to run half full and then pit at the mid point in the race. The UKCTs that had so dominated at Westhill were to be little more than also-rans as they failed to get to grips with the bumps and turns of Jamaica's premier circuit.

SamH made a poor start behind Hawthorn and Collins and it took two laps before he took the lead despite the weight advantage of such light fuel tanks. He pressed hard and by lap 12 he was ready for his stop. As usual the Maserati pit crew were less than effective and cost SamH some 53 seconds as they struggled to replace his tyres and replenish his tanks. By the time he blasted out of the pits Collins and Hawthorn were 45 seconds up the road with only 10 laps left to run.

On his out lap SamH worked hard to bed in his new tyres and the Ferrari team relaxed a little as he failed to gain any ground on the two Englishmen. Then he went to work. Lap after lap he closed the gap, repeatedly breaking and then re-breaking the lap record, lapping a full eight seconds faster than his own qualifying time. By the time Ferrari realised the danger their mirrors were full of Maserati.

SamH simply picked them off like cherries to secure his 24th and final, and perhaps greatest, Grand Prix victory.
