New car models, later marks, and lost looks.
Hello. I was sitting there staring at this picture of a mkI escort, thinking how amazing this car looks, how raw and fast it looks even when it is parked up.

And then I thought about the later marks of escorts, the mark II was really nice too, I like the shape of that car, its not too much different from the mark I, some different features but still had that racey, raw look about it.

Then come the mkIII escort, I mean, this car is a dog. It looks awful, boxy, lost of all its great looks from previous models. It looks like it was made from an airfix kit.

So what is your worst "new model" that ever came out that was worse than the model before it?

I choose the mkIII escort compared to the mkII.

Discuss.
Well design goes in cycles really through phases of what new cars are out there and there are very few cars made today I like the look of. So any car made today that is an updated model.

As one who hates modern cars, here's my list...

- Ford Fiesta Mk6 (excluding ZS/ST), Focus Mk2 (ex. ST and saloon), S-MAX, C-MAX
- New Renault Clio
- New Vauxhall Corsa
- New Fiat Punto and the one before it
- All Peugeots since the 206

So basically anything that's just an average, cheap, crappy, ugly, heavy, slow modern car.

peugeots had a really nice unique design and look on their headlights, it was like a trademark then they just made them look like a whores eyebrows in the next models.
The Ford Cortina Mk III was a work of art...then they went downhill until now we have the boring Mondeo!

Agree there, all the models look the same as each other or other cars from the same manufacturer (namely the Corsa and the Astra)

The new Fiesta is a real shame tbh, the Mk3/4 models were hot looking especially the Ghia and Zetec models, but the latter models have turned to crap on their "new base", which is like a smaller version of the Fusion. And the new Clio, well Peugeot anyone?

I'm not really fond of the fiesta MK4 (I drive one though), but I really love the MK5 Sport. It looks awesome, and like previously mentioned, the MK6 brought it all down. I won't say it's ugly, but I don't really like it either. If I have to choose between a MK5 or 6, it would be 5.

The new Renault Twingo, now THAT'S ugly! The old one was ugly already, but the new one beats it because the old one at least had some originality. I do like the Twingo commercial, 99% serious. I was rofl-ing when the exhaust shot out a flag "vroum".
bmw 3serise... when the early model'd 2002i came out... looked great , nice n fast.. then the early 3 serise came , still great then everything went downhill when they made the e36 body shape.. i just dont like it... it seems with every new car they make they lose the raw , " drive me faster" feeling you get as the killer throttle response kicks in... now all there cars seem so diluted to the extent that i cant bare the thought of ever liking bmws again ( models beyond 1992 )
Ben, don't knock the E36

I agree slightly. The MkI and MkII Escort were sexy, I think the MkIII and MkIV and just about to become "Classic sexy"

I love the MkIII Capri. Just the "I'm made to be driven fast" looks about it. I dont get that from a Puma
The newest generation of BMWs, with the exception of the 3 series. Man, the 6 series is just gross.
The BMW is definitely on a downhill spiral. The cars just look like a mass of design and no grunt of a car anywhere in sight.
The Peugeot 307 and MkII Focus were both huge disappointments for me, two really stylish and fairly radically different when new cars replaced with blander, bloated looking unadventurous everyday cars.
Diablo->Murcielago/Gallardo

As pointed out by Clarkson, they lost the utter madness that defined the older Lambos. I'm also not a big fan of the body style. It's all polygons, and not in that cool F117 way. I realize it's not officially an updated model but I think it's a fair point.
Quote from The General Lee :Ben, don't knock the E36

why not ?? even to prove the lack of class after the e30 models , compare the prices of a 325 in both e30 & e36 with same spec and mileage... the e30 is more expensive

but i have to agree on the escourt point cause some cars make box styles look cool ( e.g toyotas's corolla, pug 205, vovlo estates ) but by god i dont think ford could have done worse... oh wait.. look at pictures of their new focus/mondeo range
The Focus Mk2. I really like the shape of the original, but the new one is just boring.
I'm not too fond of the new Civics either.

Biggest one for me is the Viper. The 94-99 model is gorgeous, then they smoothed off all the parts that made it look like a snake and flattened out all the curves that made it so nice in the first place.
Sacrilege!

Don't forget the Mk5! It was very similiar to the Mk4 as well, and was the last decent Fiesta Ford made imo, because the Mk6 (the Fusion-looking one) really is ugly.

Good taste! I drive a Mk5 Zetec Fiesta (not the Sport )

I have to say I like the new Lambos (hate the interior though) and the new Viper...
Yup and the Mk5 (well i did mean the Mk 4/5 actually, typo), my friend owns a Mk4 Fiesta Ghia which is one good looking beaut, 1.4i zetec engine built by mazda, so nice it sounds like its a V6 not a 16v straight 4 :P

My neighbour owns the Mk6 fiesta and the interior is quite roomy and spacious, but it just looks horrible and cheap compared to the older ghia.

Personally I prefer cars pre-1998 and the cars after that have been ruined.
totally agree with the viper and the fiesta's too.

Have cars taken this strange and ugly route due to safety standards? Has so much computer aided wind tunnel testing and design been performed that they all look the same, brillcream slick.

Why do the latest touring cars look like little hatchbacks with fat arses

the new clio is horrible looking, its like they tried to shrink the megane. The megane is a good looking car, the new clio not so much.

and also, the newer mustangs coming out just look far too... bland to me. The old classic mustangs just looked so raw and racy and stuff, the new ones just look.. meh

From that to

IMO, the current Mustang is an improvement over the last 2 models.

The old Meganes (late 90's) was nice, it had a sporty coupe look to it. The newer ones look like a polygonal nightmare. The 'sport' edition of the new Megane is a joke too imo.

Leave the new Mustang alone! It's still quite sporty and performs well, which a lot of modern cars are lacking.

Have to admit they did a better job at the last one. The '95 (I think) model is the worst one ever.

But the mid sixtees version is the hottest one. Just today I saw a green one parked, completely mint, awesome machine!
The 1965 Stand was really nice. I think the newer models are going back to that though, with the similarly squared off parts that it had. I like the newer Stangs from about 2005 onward.

As a slightly off-topic aside, some swine had parked a dark metallic green TVR Sagaris opposite my work at lunchtime today. I had to resist taking pictures though because people I knew might've thought I was a bit sad
Pic comparison of the Viper to rest the case of People With Good Taste vs. Crappy Designer Departments.

I'm not sure if it counts because it's really just another small German hatchback, but the new mini is just plain horrible.

And the new Honda Civic (European version).

I actually quite liked the old Twingo, shame they didn't sell any RHD versions.
