ATI Catalyst 7.9 - Unusable
I just tried the latest catalyst from ati (7.9) and anything which uses directx doesn't work anymore. Even dxdiag cannot produce that spinning cube anymore, it gives some sort of error. Just a heads up for anyone thinking of using it. Ati really bombed this time.

(I'm using radeon 9600xt if it counts.)

ive not even been tempted to update my ati drivers from about 6.9. Gives me all the performance i need. Too many bad experience with ati drivers, so i find one that works and stick with that for about a year, until games start not working with it
7.9's here, work fine, no improvement, but certainly no problems either.

Ditto! I'm using a Radeon X2900 HD if that makes any difference.

I've got the same problem, 7.9 won't run LFS at all. Just get a black screen and a message about how DX can't initialize the graphics device. I rolled back to 7.8 and it works fine now.

Radeon X800 here.
X800 here as well. I tried LFS with the 7.9's and it's fine. So, I don't think it's the drivers. I'd recommend a proper uninstall or your old drivers, followed by running Driver Cleaner Pro (just to be sure) and trying again. Or you could stick with the old drivers. 7.8's are beautiful for LFS and other games for me.
I did uninstall the old driver for add/remove before installiing in 7.9, but I've not run any driver cleaner, so I might try that later. I'll just leave it with 7.8 for the moment though, as you say it's pretty faultless.

The 7.9 drivers have a massive issue with AGP systems - it seems AMD/ATI have broken the code which deals with AGP, at least for me and a lot of others I've heard. If you open up the catalyst control center you will notice that under the smartgart settings all the AGP settings are off. Hopefully they'll issue a hotfix soon.

Edit: It was the 7.8 drivers that had the issue with AGP cards with the PCI Express bridge, my mistake, ignore this post.
