Self build, or prebuilt? Do you have a monitor? Which OS do you want? Who can you buy from?

This is easy! Buy mine . It's 2 years old, not the best one out there that was available at the time and I paid $550 + $50 for the recently added older generation gfx card.

If you are looking for just LFS, you should be able to use any currrently available PC since that is what I can do with my 2 year old Athalon 64 3500+.
sounds nice lol as PA means Pensilvania or w.e lol im from massachusetts so yea im looking for a prebuilt anywere in the usa or like a best buy or curcit city or any place that my mom can drive me i need a moniter mouse and keyboard
Cheap
I just built two identical Micro-ATX systems for some ppl for $600 apiece. Had 2.4 GHz, 2 Gb RAM, wireless mouse and keyboards, 320 Gb HD, DL DVD-Burner, TV Tuner Card and everything. The only thing missing was a graphics card (slimline case) because they didn't need one so I got them onboard video in the form of a GeForce 6200. If you wanna know what parts I used, just lemme know.

2.4 GHz means nothing - if it was a Core 2 Quad then it's good, if it was a Celeron then it's sh*t

Good luck spending £300 on PC and expecting anything decent with a monitor though.
2.4 GHz Athlon 64 X2... no it's not a Core2Duo, I know, but it gets the job done.

And yea, I should mention, they already had 19" flat panels, so that wasn't included. A decent flat panel will add at least $150...

can ALMOST do it but would not be a very good g-card with it... everything else would be fine though
Honestly the best advice I can give for budget PC's like this is to obviously use Newegg.com to order the parts, but more importantly, if you wait patiently enough and hunt around thoroughly, you can get some pretty neat combo deals that can shave $100+ off the total price...
comp
i bought my new computer( see "my rig" topic)
for just ~360 ls, it is about ~330 pounds
but we in latvia have higher prices for components
i payed 500€ for the following specs:

GeForce 8500GT(temporary card as waiting for the new Nvidia line to come out)
2x 1024MB DDR667 G.Skill
ASUS M2V (now crosshair so actually system costs 700-800)
AMD AM2 Athlon 4600+ X2 @ 2.4Ghz
some casemodders case
1 optical
1 250Gb hdd
550Watt Xilence PSU (now looking for a enermax 600+Watt one)
so actually my system costs about 1000€.... more then i thought lol
but for 700$ u should get a pretty decent one
A pentium E or even a PD would work fine, matched with a decent graphic card (7600 GT?) It wont achieve triple digit fps like you want, but it's really pointless because I bet the monitor you will be buying wont refresh quicker then 60 or 75hz anyways.
