The online racing simulator
Nick Heidfeld plays LFS (video)
Just found this from youtube, I'm surprised this haven't been posted here before?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=v7HJ14Vt2nQ

6 min long interview (in German) with Heidfeld, from some Intel Racing Tour event.

Could some German translate the main points he is saying, please? Sounded like more serious discussion about reality vs. virtual stuff, than the usual "the game is super realistc, bye have a nice day".
He says he likes Gran Tourismo or whatever it's called.
LFS isnt mentioned in the video at all. They are showing it in the background during the whole video but dont even say what game it is.

In the first half, he talks about how close computer games are to reality and comes to the conclusion that they are not close (obviously). He says he prefers consoles over PC games and that Gran Turismo is one of his favourite games.

In the second half, they talk about his RL racing. No translation needed, I think. Its the same he says in thousands of other interviews.
Ah, he says that he can imagine driving rally after he retires from F1.
I´m not shure if he played LFS. I don´t speak german, I did not watch something like LFS.

It's pretty obvious on the screens, especially in the start of the video.

EDIT: also you can see how he smiles and asks for the headphones as soon as he starts playing - classic LFS newbie reaction :P

That part I did understood and I just joined the Nick Heidfeld hater club

In some point he mentioned McLaren simulator (I think).

.

Yeah and how simulators can play a part for tracks that haven't been driven on, like the Fuji track and how Lewis Hamilton used the simulator for track familiarisation.

Yes but he didnt say anything new.

Only that he knows not much about it because McLaren keep it very secret. He can imagine that it comes closer to reality than other "games" but doesnt know anything more about it.

lol, watching at 5cm to the screen I get the "ok" bottom, you´re right, I´m rong
Ok... so in conclusion: boring useless video

Most interesting part was when some guy took out the modified G25... after 6:10. LCD screen?
Who cares about sims if your'e already doing for real what the simmers are painfully striving to simulate? Not many people, I'd presume. Sims are mainly for folk who don't have the chance, don't have the balls, or don't have the money to do whatever they're doing in reality. Atleast, that's my skewed late night generalisation for tonight.

And for those who like them for what they are.

This message brought to you by the Simulator Appreciation Society.
You can't say you play sims, but would never race a real car, because Sim racing is better. Electrik Kar couldn't be more correct. Everyone that Sims. Wants to get as close as they can. Then the 'Neon Noobs' can stick to NFS.
Don't speak a word of German, but can anyone tell me if at any stage of the interview did he explain "the beard" ? (been puzzling me for a while that)
he says that there is nothing similar from sim racing to real racing (f1)
Who's Nick Hedfield

hehehehe Just kidding, but I only know who he is now from this very thread . Boring F1.......

Exactly. LFS, as most (good) sims, attracts a very wide range of persons.
I mean, such a sim could be appreciated also by computer geeks who rarely give a damn about checking the oil level of their cars.

There's nothing wrong in appreciating a neat piece of software that has so many qualities in it, without missing real life racing. LFS is a simulator, but that doesn't mean 'replacement' for me. Why is it so hard for some people to understand that I might want to be something different than a race car driver in my life?
he plays LFS in the video, and I think that he says that PC or consoles arent something related to reality because he cant drive good on a sim or in console.... or because he didnt enjoyed LFS..

Same here. I've never had any interest in cars, although I watch a fair amount of motorsport and have a fair respect for sportsmen. LFS has re-affirmed the fact that I want to buy a super seven at some point in my life, but apart from that I don't relate it to the real world at all.
This has nothing to do with anything I have debated with you before Kev, but honestly, if you don't like Cars, why do you like Motorsport?!
Sorry to say this but...

who?
Dale Earnhardt, who?
Who's dale eandhart?
Quote from BlueFlame :Everyone that Sims. Wants to get as close as they can.

To me computer gaming is something completely separate that just stands on its own. Whenever I play LFS I'm enjoying a game. What furthers the enjoyment is that I don't have to invest time in thinking of the "rules" as it simulates something familiar and/or just about logical. What fascinates me more, as a sucker for computer-human interfaces, is the ability it has to actually send me some feedback of what happens in it's world back to my world.

Either flight sims or driving sims do not reflect my aspirations or my hidden dreams in any way, nor playing Elite ever meant I wanted to fall around in space (although admittedly Elite's lack of physics didn't allow for that) inside a polygonal spaceship any more than playing some RPG made me wish my world was dragon-infested and have me run around in 40kg of armour.
