Stuttering when someone leaves the pits
Hi,

This has probably been discussed a lot of times, but I couldn't find a good answer.

When someone leaves the pits I get stuttering. Tonight was MOE quali, and I couldn't even do 1 clean lap, just because of the stuttering..

It only occured since patch X. Even after a reinstall of my pc and later LFS itself too, it still happends.

My PC isn't that bad;

Intel Pentium 4, 3,0 GHz
1536 MB DDR2 RAM
Nvidia GeForce 7800 GS

My internet connection is 2 mb down, 512 kb up, so that's not bad either..

It's not because it's loading the skin, because it only loads the skin when you're going almost 0 km/h for a longer time.

Can anyone please tell me what this could be and how I can solve it? I'm getting really sick of it now.

Thanks in advance,

Darkone
It (seemingly) can't be solved, I have the same problem, lots of others do too, it's been mentioned many times, I mentioned it throughout the last round of test patches, but it's still there.

Yes, its a PITA, but it's one of those things you have to live with........for now

Have to live with.. Ye I guess, but it kinda ruined my quali, and it ruined a lot of races and quali's and pb's. Kinda unnessesary..

But there are a lot of people who don't have the stuttering. So what does their setup/install/whatever differ from the people with the stuttering?
Well, I can immediattely see we both have Intel HT CPU's..............
that aint it.
ive got it too and ive got an athlon xp.

I get a very slight stuttering, not enough to effect my racing but its definitely there. I got the impression LFS was searching the entire skin directory before it decided whether to download the skin because whenever it happens I always hear my hard disk go mad.

Thus maybe people with more skins? Although that wouldnt explain stuttering after DarkOne's reinstall. Did you copy your old LFS folder?

I'm geussing it's to do with HDD's here...

What speed do you both have?

Never got this problem on my old Seagate 7200.7's.
I noticed this a lot more in the last year than I ever did before, and it's REALLY annoying. It can put you into a wall if you're in a bad spot.

My machine:
X2 4200+
7900GTX
Maxtor 320GB 7200RPM
2GB DDR

It's always been there since the beginning. IMO it has improved from how it was in the past. Some players seem to cause more stutter than others. Perhaps the severity of it is related to their distance from the server?

I never get stuttering tho...

So all of you have XP???

I have Vista, but I also run it on windows 2000 and still no problems.
Mabye the Developers are making it run on vista (preferably).
I would recomend downloading a patch of lfs before vista came out... like W, V or something.
Cya!!!

FTR i never got this in Vista, or XP.

It's something to do with the HDD's more than anything - so far the only HDD named has been a Maxtor, a name synonymous with Quality...
Hard Disk...
As you can see in my signature my hard disk is a SAMSUNG 2014N ATA 200GB.

Are you using vista at the moment?
XP, 7200rpm ATA HDD
Yes, I'm using XP. I've been using LFS on XP as far as I can remember, and before patch X I never noticed the stuttering.

Also, I have 3 different HDD's, all 7200 RPM, 2 extern, 1 intern, I tried LFS on all three, but no difference.
I get this too. Caused me to have a massive crash a few weeks ago whilst leading a close race.

I was under the impression that the (major) stuttering appeared at the same time LFS switched from using jpgs to texture the cars, and started using dds files. Whatever the problem, it doesn't appear to have anything to do with processor type or hard drives, etc. In my ultra-n00b knowledge of programming, it feels as though the process of loading the dds file as a new car leaves the pits is given such high priority that everything else in LFS just halts.

My rather ageing system:
Win XP Home SP2
Athlon XP 2600
Asus A7N8X Deluxe (nForce2) mobo
1 gig PC3200 RAM
GeForce 5900 128MB
LFS runs from a Seagate 7200.7 SATA drive that is kept reasonably well defragged.

Yes, but i've also run Vista off a Seagate 7200.7 and a 7200.10 in XP, using patch X (in fact ALL patches, including W39 and X12 etc)

Not helpful as to what the drive is.

Well i think Scawen did this new downloading-skins-before-you-connect and the DDS switch for this exact reason, to PREVENT this issue.

If you've got a 7200.7 then that throws me theory out the window.

I would say RAM, but i doubt it's that either

It's the only thing I can think off. Because I got 2 RAM cards of a different size (512 and 1024). That might be a problem. But I was planning to replace that 512 by a 1024 anyway. We'll see. If it solves anything you will hear it.
It's definatly worse since X, I don't even remember having the problem prior to the X patch.

As for the HDD, I believe it's either a seagate barracuda, or a WD drive.

Now, the DDS file change is interesting, I have an AGP card, not PCI-X, would this cause the stutter, when loading the DDS file in the GFX memory?

edit : and who was the thread starter in that thread?

AGP's only problem was that it didn't supply enough power to the cards, it could maintain a data rate to keep an 8800GTS happy.
I used to have this problem, about a month ago it started to stutter, I was wondering if it was maybe because I had my gfx card and processor clocked but after reverting back to factory settings it was still the same. I have very recently formatted and have since not had the problem again. I have clocked my system again since the format and im running a SATA Western Digital HDD, both before and after the format. I just hope it stays this way.

As a note I did not backup my lfs folder (doh!) and have pretty much a fresh install running now so maybe its an increased amount of content that is causing problems?

Spec:
Athlon 64 3500+
1GB Corsair DDR 400MHz/PC3200
ECS’ KN1 Extreme
GeForce 6800GT 256MB PCI-E
Western Digital SATA HDD 7200 RPM
Standard Prof x86 XP fully updated

Yep, I thought that too but the stuttering is worse, not better. Pre-X, when jpgs were used in memory to skin the cars, I got a slight delay as a new car left the pits, but nothing significant and it was often imperceptible. Now that it's handling dds files, the stuttering is massively worse for me. There's been times on small grids when the start light sequence is quick, that I've almost missed the green light due to the stuttering on the rare occasions it has to load nearly all the car skins around me (if for whatever reason they weren't loaded the previous race).

I also fail to see how the hard drive brand would be a cause of this. The dds files aren't big, no desktop hard drive in recent history would fail to have enough throughput to load the file into memory and cause this kind of stuttering. In addition, if the skinfile has just been downloaded from LFSW the same session, is it still stored in memory before it gets applied to the car, and does it cause the same amount of stuttering as an older, previously downloaded skin that is sourced from the hard drive? That's something that could be tested to determine (or rule out) where the problem lies in the process of applying a skin.

RAM is surely also not the cause. Not unless the LFS pixies crept into my flat at around the time patch X was released, and switched my pair of 512MB sticks of Corsair PC3200 for something that causes problems.
