@Bladerunner, while you were in France did you ever try that bird meal thingy. Have'nt a clue what its called, but its the one where the birds are caught in huge nets at dusk, then very lightly poached in red wine and eaten whole, head, beak, legs, feet and all. The whole thing down in one.
It was on one of Clarksons shows "Meet the neighbours" or "Clarksons' Europe" or something, was on a couple of years ago.
Obviously you mean "Ortolan".
They were banned in France in 1999, but they are still 'available' if you know where (and how ) to ask for them.
I did try them once, and although they were enjoyable and tasty enough, it was a lot of work eating them, (because of the feathers!) for not a lot of meat.
I have also tried Escargots (yummy!!!) and Cuisses de grenouilles (frogs legs!) Not sure if it was the way they were cooked, but tasted like stringy chicken to me
On survival courses in the forces, I ate rat and hedgehog, but the best meat I ever tasted was fresh young venison....yes folks..I ATE BAMBI!!!!!
I haven't had the inclination to eat "Long Pig" yet, but when (*IF*) I do, I want Hannibal Lecter to do teh cookingz
Yeah, it is Ortolan, i've just been Googling it, and managed to find it just as i noticed your post. You gotta love the French for their cooking.
They also hunt wild boar over there. Although i've never had it as such, i have had wild boar pate, and wow it's fantastic.
Would really like to try truffles and frois grois (spelling ?) someday, maybe when i win the lottery
{Edit} Wark, i really really wanna comment on that pic, but after a recent thread where i was accused of being 'anti-american' simply because i cracked a "nob" gag, i think i'll pass on this one
WTF is that???? looks like HUGE willies in a wafer! (and I always thought Geoduck was a Pokemon!!)
Wild Boar (sanglier) is beautiful...but don't go eating your wild pigs until AFTER they have found your truffles!!!
Truffles are more expensive than gold (pound for pound), so don't use too much of them!
My ex-mother-in-law used to make omelettes with truffles, and you only need a VERY small amount to get the flavour. As for Foie Gras (goose liver.... which will make ALL vegetarians run for miles, because the geese are force-fed with corn to swell the livers!) was on the menu EVERY Christmas.
Now you all also know the REAL cause of global warming...its Bladey doing the cooking!!!! (and letting off copious amounts of methane afterwards!)
The earth is screwed up by the industrial age. Everybody then was like "NATURE??? WHO THE *$^# NEEDS NATURE??? DESTROY EVERYTHING!!!!" Then recently people realize "Oh crap, we're screwing ourselves over" But oh well, we are already at the point of no return.
I think environmentalist's passion are misplaced. everyone should invest heavily in space colony research. The earth is screwed anyway, we can't fix it, only thing left to do is get into space asap.
Same here. The pollution in China is horrid. I mean Europe only accounts for about 15% of human pollution. American accounts for about 60% and the rest are China's contributions.
Why?
Europeans: small cars, very rural, lots of nature, more conservative than Americans
Americans: BIG GIANT cars (that crappy useless hummer that everyone's ejaculating for), heavily industrial (smog in L.A. actually kills people there), small rural areas, and people are highly wasteful.
China: developing country=heavy pollution, that's a fact (look at Taiwan)
Europeans generally have really nothing to worry about, you guys aren't the ones polluting the earth but that still doesn't mean you can go on a waste rampage, just live your life normally. It's the Americans and Chinese that better watch out.
Hmmm, that's not based on my experiences. But then again I did travel to the countryside a lot I enjoy the European sceneries much more than the American sceneries
