Radiohead announces new album
They officially rule even more than they did yesterday.

I wondered what was going to happen actually, they've had this album ready to go for ages but were out of contract with EMI and in limbo. I wasn't expecting this until next year at least! Good on 'em

Thanks for the headsup DWB
I've always said that records were overpriced, but now I'm actually having to seriously consider what I ought to pay someone to hear their music. Interesting bit of self-reflection.

I'm really tempted to get the whole thing, but I'm not sure I have $80 to drop on it right now. I'm thinking I'll give them $5-10 for the download.
I'd be happy to drop 10 or 20 on the download (kudos to Radiohead for bypassing iTunes btw) but I'm going to get the whole thing (plus when you buy the disc pack you get the download as well anyway). I want the vinyl, artwork, discs, all that stuff. Most of the time I'm happy with downloading but with bands I really dig, I like to have a tangible representation of what I listen to. With Mars Volta albums especially, the vinyls and accompanying artwork really are collector's items.

This is the way forward.

I have thought for years now that it will only take one big band to self publish to put the final nail in the coffin for the record industry.

If this pays off for them, and I think it will, the other big bands will be waiting for the moment their contracts expire. You already have Trent (NIN) telling the Aussie fans to download and steal his music because he feels his record company is ripping them off cost wise.

If Eraiser (Thom Yorks last solo CD) is anything to go by then this new one should be good.
I've often wondered why more bands don't self-release, especially when there are so many massively wealthy bands in existence (U2 come to mind, as do Metallica) who could do it very easily ... the amount of control you could have over what happens in your name would surely appeal to a few enormous egos (see bands previously mentioned ).
I think Pearl Jam has done something along these lines before, maybe?
I gave 'em 3 pounds for the download.

Lol, you're all heart you

Thanks for the link BTW, and thanks to good old Thom York for being such a nambie pambie Lefty. Shame there arnt more like him in the music biz.
More than I've paid for an album in 3+ years, sadly.

See, I would like to buy the disc box, but does anyone else think it's pretty pointless having vinyl LPs in there? (they are vinyls aren't they?) OK, I know some people LOVE vinyl, but really, shouldn't they just make them an optional extra for those who do want it.

I reckon a CD box set with all the other crap would be fine, maybe make it 20-30quid instead.

I would happily pay 20quid for just the CD, I don't really need all the other crap!
Yeah, I agree. It's the main reason I'm not buying the hardcopy at the moment. I appreciate that it's great for collectors, but for the average listener it's major overkill.
Radiohead are my all time favourite band of all time ever! I was totally shocked to see this story on the BBC news when I took my lunch break...

I've been trying to work out how much I'll pay for it, but I'm thinking a fiver sounds fair. I won't be buying the fancy box-set...

The important question now is, when is the tour?
I couldn't pass up the box-set. It's a bona fide collector's item! Imagine: if Pink Floyd or Zeppelin did something like this 30 years ago, people today (e.g. me) would be injuring themselves to get a hold of an original release ...

BTW I don't have a record player (yet) but I collect vinyl anyway. That way, all my sides stay pristine and in their original packaging

As for the tour, it will be run along the same lines as the download: whenever we want and for however much we can afford

I only ditched my vinyl when I moved to NZ. Dragging 500 LPs and a high end hi-fi 12000miles didn't add up so sold all before the move. The record player was far far too delicate for the trip (Lynn Sondek/Naim aro/Troika and Naim amps)

I do miss the sound it could produce. I have not heard a CD player based system that would touch it since but TBH I just use MP3. I use music far more because its easy now
Ouch. Would've been painful to leave all that vinyl behind I'm sort of glad I don't have a record player because (a) I have nowhere to put it in my tiny house and (b) my dog would make it skip all the time. Stupid floorboards. Oh well, next house. Maybe.

Yep it was a hard call. But we sold most of what we had before the move which made it easier tgo deal with.

Floorboards are a nightmare unless you table is well suspended and on a good platform.
My next turntable-table will be gyroscopically stabilised so as to ensure smooth playback, even during a Richter 5 earthquake
Make sure "Climbing Up the Walls" is playing at that point.
Well, it was worth the four year wait. What a really lovely album. I had high expectations, as I always do for Radiohead, but I've had them all nicely satisfied. Their best recording since Kid A.
Aye, I like it so far.
Really digging it so far. The production is gorgeous and cutting-edge without sounding sterile (such as Fallout Boy or any other fashion-rock band) and the arrangements are just beautiful (as I've come to expect from the 'head). Only listened once though so it shall live in my Ippod shuffle all by itself so that I can get to know it while I take the train to work.
