Going Blind...
Well I had an appointment with my optometrist today, first since I got my glasses three years ago. They basically told me that my right eye will probably keep getting worse as the years go by, even with glasses. I'm pretty bummed, knowing that I have one eye with common blur, and one eye that is horrible, and won't get any better. Pretty paranoid about this haunting me years down the road...

To keep this from being a rant, I ask, who here has glasses, and if so, how bad is your eyesight?

Isn't that basically true for anybody (talking about both eyes here)? Your hearing slowly but continually degrades over your lifetime, your eyesight happens more in bursts, and later in life. It's basically all part of aging and your body trying to kill you off as you've out-lived your biological purpose of reproducing (that's sure to cheer up the oldies :tilt.

And those not getting any

Hopefully there will be some sort of advance in sight therapy for you dropin_biking Personally I wear glasses, and have done for about 3 years now. The only reason is that using a computer so much as caused a detrimental effect on my longer range sight
Bleh. Wait until your 30s. You won't notice your eyes not working when your back's not working and your knees aren't working and your hips are getting a bit iffy and your hair's falling out and there's pudgy bits obscuring your waistline, etc.

It was probably your doctor's kind way of saying "Things will probably be sweet until you're 26 or so, then the decay sets in and eventually you die".

Hope that cheered you up.

Funny, how thats pretty much what my optometrist told me. First thing he asked was if I used computers a lot, and what monitor I have and such.
~Bryan~
That's a same. I'm pretty sure i'll lose my right eye too eventually. It's already a lot worse than my left.

For some reason i read better with my right but see better farther with me left.
I've been using glasses since last year, It's part of the computer but It's mostly caused by a bike accident I had when I was 8... It was weird because I didn't realise that my sight wasn't good until last year because I had headaches everyday and things like that.
First noticed my eyes getting worse at school, seemed every year i'd have to move one desk closer to the blackboard (and the teacher). Then when i hit 16 and got my first bike it was getting a bit to dangerous sharing the road with cars and lorries that i couldn't see until they were a few feet away, so i thought it best to go for an eye test....

My first prescription was -2.50 or there abouts. But i refused to wear glasses, so i went for contact lenses instead.

Now, i'm not so vain and i tend to wear glasses these days (they give better vision than lenses) but my prescription has gone to a -4.75.

So my eyes have lost -2.25 in 22 years, which according to my optometrist is about normal. Smoking doesn't help, neither does a bad diet, nor does spending large amounts of time sitting infront of a tv or computer screen.

Don't know how old you are right now, but aging happens to all of us, you can't escape it, unless you're Micheal Jackson (but lets not go down that road).

They're doing amazing things with laser eye surgery these days so all hope is not lost. But, try eating an apple a day and get out more.....oh and quit the dope
Last time I went to the eye doctor, he told me to get glasses so I did, but I don't use them because I know it doesn't help because I took a test and it didnt matter on or off. :/
Ever find it weird how you never know your eyes are bad, untill you look through proper glasses, it blew me away the first time, it took me a year of squinting before I realized my eye sight should be stronger.

By the way, Blas89, loving the avatar! And Mazz, quiting pot would be like taking slow-mo out of The Matrix, NOTHING'S TRIPPY!

Wow, I thought my eyesight was pretty bad. I have progressives and multiple prisms in my glasses (big thick binoculars, basically), and I'm also very colourblind.

Obviously, I'm more fortunate than you in this case. I can't imagine losing my eyesight, even in just one side

I'm sure glad I use LCD monitors - never going to back to CRTs again!

Quote :Isn't that basically true for anybody (talking about both eyes here)? Your hearing slowly but continually degrades over your lifetime, your eyesight happens more in bursts, and later in life

Yes, but I think what he is talking about is that it is degrading far more rapidly.

Crap...sometimes (OK, most of the time), I'm just too lazy to excercise, but now you've really made me think

Was going to write the exact same thing. CRT's maybe be better image/colour depth wise, but my eyes are thanking me I've switched over to an LCD instead. I used to have huge headaches and watery/blurry eyes from looking into my old CRT. I tellsya, a few more years of that and I'd be blind already. LCDs on the other hand are relatively mild on the eyes.

If you use computers a lot- make sure to exercise your long range vision by intermittently looking at faraway objects (alteast 8 metres I've been told).

If you get it up

...

Not disagreeing with you but I have never had any eye issues when I used CRTs a lot few years back. I guess it is more of an individual thing. And if your CRT is not any good it will certainly make your head ache.
What's this? Four-eye anonymous?

Well, I've had glasses since the third grade, that's almost 10 years already. Pretty normal for me, can't really live without them because firstly, I can't see much and secondly, it feels weird to not wear them, like a part of me was missing. I've got used that my sight gets worse, the pace has slowed down a bit, and if it stops getting worse and stabilizes I might try a surgery. Problem is that it's rather expensive, and if there is a risk losing your sight I'm not doing it. But I'm glad that optics are advanced as they are, because I think my glasses with -5,75 lenses would be rather thick and heavy if it was year 1987.
I got glasses when I was 11. Started at -1.5, gradually degrading to -5.5 when I reached my twenties. But after that it stabilised, even though my job requires looking at a monitor all day. (BTW, I don't think reading from paper of screen makes much difference. Both are straining the eye. It does help if you get a good monitor, though, and provide good lighting.)

I'm 44 now, and my close-range vision is getting worse. In a couple of years I'll either need separate glasses for reading, or varifocal glasses.

To the OP: AFIAK I'm a normal case (that is, in the development of my eyesight :tilt. Do you have a special medical condition? If not, then going blind won't happen until you're 70 or older.
I had fantastic eyesight when I was young. I could read street names from about 500 yards when my folks couldn't even see the signs.

But a couple of years ago I went to the doc about constant headaches and an eye test showed I needed reading glasses. Didn't stop the headaches, but that's another story. Now to be honest, these glasses are barely shaped at all. Their magnification is practically nothing, but the difference when I put them on is amazing. I can read things without them, but small text at about 60 or 70 yards basically turns into an illegible blur.

I think the problem is that these days things have been set up so that everything you need is close to you, especially office jobs. So your eyes get no exercise switching focus from near to middle distance to far and the muscles get lazy.
I don't wear my glasses at work for this reason. It means that during the day the muscles have to work more as I'm walking round the office or looking around at people, or just staring into space (which I do a lot)

Of course it's still getting worse, even with the glasses, I can tell. Hopefully I won't ever get to the stage where I need them all the time, but you never know.

Creepy as it may sound, they're doing amazing things with bionic eyes for completely blind people these days. The current cells are too small for decent resolution (I think the first one was 8x8 resolution, the newer ones are far higher), but the previously 100% blind test subjects can tell shape and colour. Which is better than nothing. And with chips getting smaller all the time it won't be long until you'll be able to get 1080p eyeballs with 2ms response or something

So I wouldn't worry too much about going blind. All that's happening is your muscles failing, same as happens to any muscle that doesn't get used as much.
Try spending a few minutes each day just switching your focus between distances. Look at your hands for a few seconds, then maybe across the other side of the street for a bit, then the other end of the street, then something just below the horizon. You might not reverse the process, but you can certainly slow down it's progress.

I've already got the whole hair falling out thing
i've had glasses for about 13 years and i'm seeing a doctor on monday to check for intra ocular pressures(?). there are many cases of glaucoma on my mothers side so better have the eyedrops before it gets much worse. sore eyes have been bothering me for god knows how long but i do spend too much time in front of monitors and have squinty eyes so...
I've needed glasses for years, but as I'm so clumsy and forgetful a pair will generally last me about 4 weeks before I either sit on them or lose them so I've not really bothered that much.

About 3 weeks ago I tried contact lenses and they're brilliant - I really don't know why I didn't try them before. Mine are the soft ones that you keep for a month, but take out each night. I get sent new pair every month.

ROFL... I've lost more bits of me than its worth keeping track of, including a short and temporary spell of (medically induced) blindness some years back. Glad to say that my biological purpose of having fun (I'll leave the reproducing to the designated breeders), is, while faltering occasionally, still intact!

My experience told me one thing; I'd rather be blind than deaf. I adapted pretty quickly, and life carried on as normal. But if I couldn't hear, there's so much that I would miss.
As with the majority of middle-aged men, my eyesight deteriorated rapidly, due to hardening of the cornea. This is a biological fact, and most guys WILL eventually need glasses to read things easily. Another solution to this common problem is to have your arms extended so that you can hold the book/newspaper/etc farther away....

My ears are shot to hell..(literally!!)..deafness induced by noise damage..at about 30% efficiency on the left, and 40% on the right..

My teeth are mostly just a distant memory..my hair (what is left of it) is a nice shade of grey...

My back takes about 30 minutes to unlock in the mornings...

My knees are totally fscked...

Who said that he was trying to scare the oldies??

BUT>>>>>>

I CAN still get it up !!! :monkey::biggrinfl:laola:
I'd be really curious to get both an eye and ear test to see how I'm going in those departments. I can't complain about my vision (yet), and I'm really thankful about that. Bit more worried about my ears though- I've reallly listened to a lot of noisy s*** over the years.

Hyper- yeah, there are better and worse CRT's for sure. Mine was apparently particularly bad, as even short stints on the computer would start to make me feel dizzy. I do tend to believe that LCDs are better for you as a whole though... (and probably better than both CRTs and plasmas in regards to environmental concerns).

Gee, if my hair ever started falling out I think I would turn very ugly very fast. I have a huge forehead, bad head shape, and I imagine lots of nasty scars where I've banged my head on stuff over the years. Eek!

LMAO, Kev. All true...

I've been wearing "corrective lenses" since I was 9 years old. Four years ago, I tried contacts, and have never had glasses on again except for about an hour before bedtime. I'm now 35, so I've had "corrective lenses" for 26 years. The last time I had a prescription change was in 1997 when I got married, and that was a very very very very slight change. For some folks, their eyes change year to year. For others, they don't change. I'm lucky that I'm one that doesn't change. Unfortunately, I still have to spend the money on an exam every year because they won't allow me to order new contacts without a yearly exam. A shame since my prescription hasn't really changed since I was 19 or so.

Although Bob is Correct, Your synopsis, was that of a 'sped up degredation' My heart dropped.. Sight is a wonderful thing, but if its only with 1 eye.. The sooner you adjust the better... All of my 'luck' i give to you, for the future
I thought this thread was about watching pron...anyway...!

It could be a whole lot worse mate. You won't just wake up one day and "oh shizzle, wheres my alarm clock" It will be a very slow process of you losing your sight, but I doubt you will lose it fully till you are atleast 50.

Cant you get them laserfied?
