Going Blind...

Worn glasses since I was about 2 years old.

One eye is 20/20 the other is like 20/30 or some such.
My eyes are pretty much 50:50 I think. One either side.

I can't remember the last time I had an eye test - it was probably 20 years ago or so. I think my close-to-myself vision is fine but my further-away vision might be getting a bit wonky, I'm not sure.
Quote from thisnameistaken :Bleh. Wait until your 30s. You won't notice your eyes not working when your back's not working and your knees aren't working and your hips are getting a bit iffy and your hair's falling out and there's pudgy bits obscuring your waistline, etc.

Maybe something went wrong with you if you have all this. I´m 32 and I´m feeling like 20. Not only in brain mate.

BTW Bryan, I have -1,75 dpt on both eyes, not too bad. But that about laser?
I had 20/20 vision until I was stung in the eye by a wasp or a bee. I'm not sure which as I didn't see it coming...

I had to have an operation on the eye to remove the sting, which wasn't pretty (they cant knock you out so you have to kinda watch the hole operation with your other eye...). It doesn't hurt, but I was and still am extremely squeemish over the whole eye popping thing.

Since then I wear glasses and my eyesight has gradually deteriorated over time, particularly in my left eye which was stung, but also in more recent times my right eye has started to fade too.

Deteriation is slow though, and I fully expect to still see at the end of my life - just with glasses.

I like having glasses anyway, they're a good bug screen and help keep stuff out of my eyes and have helped my hay fever by creating their own little pocket of air.
I used to wear glasses but ever since I misplaced them after my last shower I've been trapped in here... PLEASE HELP ME!

Actually, I had corrective surgery about a year ago after wearing glasses for about 21 years - 20/20, perfectly clear and luckily no side-effects. I got fed up with them as I realised how utterly, annoyingly helpless I was without them.

Moderately amusing anecdote follows:
Had the frame break one day when I was living in Seville, about the first days I got there, and as I was rambling around the streets trying to find a shop to get them repaired (not easy if they didn't have 96pt signs) I bumped into this blind person and as I turned to apologize he was already apologizing and saying "sorry - I'm blind" to which the only reply I could actually come up with, and kinda shocked me, was "me too".
Quote from Mazz4200 :First noticed my eyes getting worse at school, seemed every year i'd have to move one desk closer to the blackboard (and the teacher). Then when i hit 16 and got my first bike it was getting a bit to dangerous sharing the road with cars and lorries that i couldn't see until they were a few feet away, so i thought it best to go for an eye test....

My first prescription was -2.50 or there abouts. But i refused to wear glasses, so i went for contact lenses instead.

Now, i'm not so vain and i tend to wear glasses these days (they give better vision than lenses) but my prescription has gone to a -4.75.

So my eyes have lost -2.25 in 22 years, which according to my optometrist is about normal. Smoking doesn't help, neither does a bad diet, nor does spending large amounts of time sitting infront of a tv or computer screen.

Don't know how old you are right now, but aging happens to all of us, you can't escape it, unless you're Micheal Jackson (but lets not go down that road).

They're doing amazing things with laser eye surgery these days so all hope is not lost. But, try eating an apple a day and get out more.....oh and quit the dope

Yeah, -4.75 is quite strong. I work for a contact lens supplier and the vast majority of people needs a lens around -1.50 to -2.50. That being said, I did once speak to a woman who had -7, so your eyesight's not that bad!

For me personally I know that sitting in front of a PC for years, both a home and at work, have really hurt my eyes. But hey, I had fun. Well, at home anyway.
I don't personally understand the language of eyesight, and all that negative crap. I go in to pickup my glasses Tuesday (they had to order the frames I wanted) And I'll quiz them up then about my 'stats'. I just know that having one eye much weaker will cause problems with depth perception, correct?

Possibly not the best attitude to have, given the nature of the information and the potential usefulness of knowing it.

You could still make a great visual artist or something like that. My dad got his eye shot out by an arrow fired by his brother, when he was very young, and he was a great artist. You won't be able to land planes or anything like that, but there are certain activities where having one eye can almost be an advantage.
Oh Bob, twas just a sentence, I get the fact that I got pwned, but hey, shit happens. Speaking of which, why don't they filter that word?

Of course, you get to wear monacles rather than glasses, eye sight test take half the time, get to admire the shape of your nose far more regularly, and best of all, it takes no time at all to wear an eye patch on pirate-themed fancy dress days. Well, so long as you put it over the defective eye.
Quote from dropin_biking :Well I had an appointment with my optometrist today, first since I got my glasses three years ago. They basically told me that my right eye will probably keep getting worse as the years go by, even with glasses. I'm pretty bummed, knowing that I have one eye with common blur, and one eye that is horrible, and won't get any better. Pretty paranoid about this haunting me years down the road...

To keep this from being a rant, I ask, who here has glasses, and if so, how bad is your eyesight?
~Bryan~

Too bad for you I play games a lot and never wore glasses... not soon to wear neighter. It's all about lighting, I always have a neon light near my console/computer

One thing I really like about this forum is that it doesn't filter so many "offensive" words. Of course anyone who uses them for punctuation is going to get banned but the odd bit of exclamation is overlooked by the mods, which is how it should be in a community of sensible people.
Yeah, indeed. I've found the LFS forum to be alot more comfortable and welcoming then any other online comunity I've been to. Only thing I can say puts shame to LFS is the way the licensed people treat demo users. I had to go through that for a long while, definitly not cool.

On topic: Compared to my current monitor (17" CRT @ 1024x768 @ 85hz) would say a 20" TFT @ 60hz feel any better on the eyes? I notice late at night (right now for instance) I either have to keep the room REALLY bright, which isn't always an option, or face the burns I get after about 20 minutes and take a break.

Meh... I don't know. It depends on the market I think. If I see a demo user from, say, Argentina, I think "Well, Argentina's economy collapsed not so long ago", whereas if I see someone from the USA begging for a free S2 license I just think he's a ****.

Honestly I couldn't tell you - I recently switched from a 17" CRT to a 22" TFT but I never had any issues with using CRTs for long periods. TFTs don't flicker though, so don't let the lower refresh rate put you off. They are apparently much easier on the eyes for people who are sensitive to that sort of thing.

You spent a long time in demo for someone who's pricing up 20" monitors.
I had a lot of problems with CRT's and my eyes, giving me manical headaches (Even at high refresh rates), but after recently switching slowly to TFT's (1 monitor then both, then an iMac), I don't get any eyestrain headaches like I used to get.
Try this with CRT's: Turn off all other lights then put the screen in your peripherial view, as far from the center as possible. You should see severe flickering at 60Hz, but sometimes at higher refreshrates, too. Now do that with an LCD you're guaranteed not to notice any of that.

Anyway, our eyes have faster response at the edges of view, so if you use a large CRT and sit too close (high FOV), your eyes can get tired really quickly.

Here in Taiwan, more than 60% of students in 9th grade already require glasses. So I think some of you people are very lucky, only worrying about eyesights after reproductive prime times...
I wear glasses since I was 8, so almost 30 years from now. My myopia went slightly worse for five years, than it stabilised and it's always been the same since then. I am in front of a computer for most part of my day, both at home and at work. Ironically I had no computer till I was 14, so my myopia has nothing to do with computers, and it hasn't gotten worse since I have one.

I wear my glasses full time, I need them to have a better life, although I'm not completely helpless without them (but I couldn't recognise your face if I was five meters away from you).
Quote from yoyoML :So I think some of you people are very lucky, only worrying about eyesights after reproductive prime times...

It is ALWAYS a good idea NOT to think about any reproductive acts while wearing glasses of the 'beer goggles' variety....it can prove VERY embarrassing the next morning...
I remember once waking up the morning after with a very bad hangover..looking next to me in the bed, and thinking "zOMG!!! WTF is THAT!!!".
So I very quietly got out of bed, got dressed, and tried to escape without waking up the monstrosity laying next to me...I was halfway down the street before I realised that we had gone back to MY place!!!

And this has happened atleast once every week throughout Bladerunner's married life.

Sorry, couldnt' resist. :P
Don't worry about it.

You'll only torture yourself thinking about it. Live happily and when the day comes, you'll just have to accept it. Many people live with disabilities. As long as you can see, you should be grateful.
Quote from Electrik Kar :There are certain activities where having one eye can almost be an advantage.

You could be a pirate.

I have 20/20 vision. But my mum, dad and younger brother dont...come to think of it, I dont even look like them!

My brother has it the worst, he used to have to wear a patch over one eye to make his "bad eye" stronger by doing all the work. He had to wear it to school when he was young, when my dad was applying the patch, he had to dry the tears so he could actually stick it down. That was untill my dad said it was basicly tourture and he stopped wearing it. They said his eye would get worse and worse, just like the doc said to you. 5 years down the line? He doesnt wera glasses, nor a patch. His eyes are great, but good enough to use and slowly getting better.

My dad was "something" sighted. I get confused with short and long. He wears contacts and because of them, his eyes have become dependent on them and have got worse, but he wants laser correction.

My mother is a bit of a 'tard. She saw glasses as a fashion statement. She is quite fashionable and generally a cool mum She went to the optitions and they said, well...you actually need glasses. But she doesnt wear them anymore.

Me? I hear you ask. When I had a check up about 4 years ago...the lady said, I have the best eyes of anyone in my age group she has ever seen. Check up last year, the same thing. kthxbai.

You should take note from the story about my brother DB. They said he would have to wear a patch over one eye till he was 18, he would be wearing glasses all his life and his eye sight would deteriation over time. He is now 13, and none of that is true.

Edit: I never get headaches or any pains while using my PC.

I'd think your weak eye has to be practically blind before you notice. Besides, your brain also measures depth by other factors: relative size and movement of objects, and one object obscuring another.

You'll be amazed what the brain can do to correct poor vision. I once saw a film of an experiment where a guy wore special goggles that mirrored the image: it turned his world upside down. At first, the guy made all sorts of "funny" errors, But after a week he could see perfectly with his goggles.
Quote from dropin_biking :I notice late at night (right now for instance) I either have to keep the room REALLY bright, which isn't always an option, or face the burns I get after about 20 minutes and take a break.

Then do the reverse: turn the monitor's brightness down. It's the difference that is stressful to the eyes.
Yes - most people think what they 'see' is just the light coming in from their eyes, but that's just one input. What you actually see is the result of your brain processing the input from both eyes, what you can hear & feel, what you remember being there already as well as part that are just invented and filled in by your brain (think of the blind spot you have in each eye - your brain just fills this in with what it thinks is best so you don't notice it).

At a most basic level, if you have poor eyesight in one eye, this is more than made up for by the other eye - I am pretty shortsighted in one eye, but both eyes together can make out much more detail than just the good eye on its own.
Two words... Billy Baxter:

Quote :I love motorcycles; they’re my eyes. When I’m on a bike I’m not blind anymore.
