Regarding who makes the sims, at least a couple (RBR and presumably the Williams one Brundle had a go in) use a cueSim system which is from a susidiary of QinetiQ (one of Williams sponsors) - the RBR press release is here

The sims won't be built by the teams. Theres quite a few companys out there that build commercial sims, Usually for pilot testing centers and the like. You can be sure that the software used in a proper commercial flight simulator will be a lot more advanced then whats used in FS.

I'm not sure if it really needs to be though, the lack of any real budget compared to domestic computers means that they don't have to worry about being efficient, coupled with the fact most of them make LFS look cutting edge. Really I think a lot of them are about getting a driver/pilot used to the environment (as in full cockpit exactly as they'd find it) and to get the track fresh in their memory.

If you are looking to improve your driving, you can consider using driving simulators. These simulators help people improve their driving skills. Training on the simulators teaches all the different processes and mechanisms to the new drivers related to driving a vehicle.

Nothing is more realistic than real life. Simulators are for simulating, not for real living.

To be fair they are probably a lot more accurate nowadays then when this thread was made 10 years ago!
