Fps!!??
i curently get 20-30 frames per second top right hand corner is this low how much do u guys and girls get i am running

intel pentium 4 cpu 2.53 ghz
2.52. ghz 512mb of ram
graphics card is stock really old 6yrs to be exact
my computer is hp pavillion

ok so if i want more frames per second which i don how do i improve perfdormance what should i but like more memory graphics card proccesor motherboard etc.. pls help thx alot
my dad wont buy me a new computer so i can upgrade for christmas
Id say, its your video card...LFS pretty much runs off the video card and bandwidt..Your CPU and RAM is alright. Just get a decent video card and that should do ya, if you need help with picking one out im sure JakG will help you out.
20-30fps is low for LFS.
You really need 40+ to be remotely drivable.

If your "original" video card is the one built onto the mother board, then it is a large part of what is holding you back. It will most likely also use your RAM for video memory, so it is a double whack.

Get a newer more capable video card. I am sure you can find something for less than $100 that will work.
also i need to know how to install a video card does it give u instructions or do u haev to figure it out ive changed (forgot name the thing where you store data) dvd cd drive fan and i think proccesor so id it hard changin the video card? i hope mines not in the mother board like the guy above me says that would suck thx 4 ur help all!
Where to start... erm, google would be the best bet I'd say. If you have changed a "thing where you store data" (hard drive perhaps?) then its fairly simple to swap out a graphics card.

Most (older) systems will have some sort of standard on-board graphics card, but this doesnt normally stop a user from adding in their own.

LFS is CPU intensive, however your system stats posted sound about right. 20-30fps imo for lfs is fine. Turn down your graphics settings if you need more. But honestly, 20-30fps is better than some.

Personally I've lived with 12-17fps for the first few years of LFS, now im around 80-120fps average, but now in the land of luxuary with a nice graphics card.
Your video card is definetly holding you back. Upgrading may be an issue (PSU, AGP or PCI-E) LFS doesn't need anything fancy to get good graphics, a 6600 GT would do you just fine.

Be aware that even if you upgrade your graphics card, LFS will still be held back by the processor, but you will still get quite the noticable performance increase.

I have Pentium 4 1,8 Ghz, 1 GB DDR RAM, Ati Radeon 9600 XT with 256 MB DDR. I know this is not the optimal configuration for LFS. I know too, I need definitly a new one. Shame that my computer is well prepared for playing after I read what the requirements on LFS Homepage say. Its ridicoulus that I can count my fps in a full starter grid on 5 fingers. My graphics preferences are at lowest.

Here is my suggestion @ Devs: Just overwork the requirements in the Download section.
Its not enjoyable playing LFS with a Computer system that is older than 5 years...

Usually the thing that keeps your FPS the lowest is your CPU in a full grid.

Your GFX card is probably the problem (as HP always use Shitty GFX cards on their PC's except at the bleeding edge), but i'm sure you could find a 6600GT for cheap, that is if the PSU will cope and you have a PCI-e/AGP port on the mobo.

Your CPU would still hold you back a bit, but if your going to start swapping the CPU and GFX card, you'll want a little more RAM (ie 1 or 2 GB) - if you do that you might as well go for AM2 as 478 and DDR1 is really expensive now.
I have 75 fps when im alone, 15 with full grid.
20 FPS is driveable. I did it for over 2 years.

Also because of a very old graphics card.

I have a AMD 2800+, 1GB RAM, Radeon 9800 Pro with 256mb and I get 50-60fps regularly. On fuller grids, I can get about 30-40fps. I think there might be something else at play with your system.

Plus 20fps is easily driveable, you dont need over 40fps to play, thats just being stupid. The human eye only detects so much....
Before we start another discussion on what frame rates the eye can perceive, racing games in particular really benefit from high frame rates. 60fps is much smoother than 30fps. 30fps is still perfectly driveable though, since the controller is now polled at 100Hz regardless of frame rate, it should be possible to drive with 20fps or maybe even lower.

I had an Athlon 1800+ (real speed: 1533 MHz), 768 MB RAM and a NORMAL Radeon 9600 and played with everything on full and still got about 20 FPS when in the middle of a full grid... I don't think it's the specs that need changing...
By the sound of whats been said, Go into your procceses menu (Ctrl+alt+del) then the procceses tab if you didint know^ then see what you have running with it in order of mem usage, also as JakG got me to do do a lap or so on lfs with the perfomance graph open and see what pritty picture you get
so for now i should just get a graphix card right?
That is an option, But if possible see if any of your over things are bottlenecked also (Procceser etc) by following my above post because if you have to much background stuff running it may actully be your procceser bottlenecking
i no b4 i play i turn off all other programs in processes in ctrl alt delete and also im runninng a
intel R 82845G/GL graphics controller is that ok?
or should i get this is it better?

Yeah..My dad bought one of those for his..still in box..If I were you I'd go for something your computer could handle..

Like a GeforceFX5500..Or something else..
120 +- with full grid

NVidia Geforce 8800 GT-X (1024 MB)

nitrox : you have only 12 racers max in grill in demo, but in S2, it's 32
here 80+- with full grid

All high-resolution packs installed, Anisotropic filtering/anti-aliasing etc op max. Not that bad

Your P4 would match fine with a 7300GT, but 110$?
You can find 7600GTs for much less than that now.
my dad wont buy me a video card im not allowed to buy it most fps i get is 27 and lowest on full grid is 5-10
Quote from nitrox1935 :120 +- with full grid

same exept i get 170 on full grid GTS

i think 20+ is driveable, anything below 11...your a moving danger...

.

you are wrong, i beg to have 15fps in start ... and 50 the whole race ... and the reality is . 8 start 15 race
