My dad showed me this laptop on one of his puter mags... I looked on the website and got the specs, it has a solid-state disk and is about the size of a hardback book. The 8Gb and the 4Gb both have video cameras and all 4 models have windows XP capability. There is and 8Gb, a 4Gb, a 4Gb surf and a 2Gb surf. The price I have found is $399
The 8Gb has 1Gb of RAM and the display is 7"... I am welcome to suggestions on whether or not to ask for this for christmas... I've attached some pictures to this post so you can look at it.

P.S Here is the link to the specs page http://event.asus.com/eeepc/microsites/en/index.htm

If you want it to learn a bit how a computer in general works (but you posted here so you must be above that level right now) then it's maybe not too bad for a first "notebook/pc" a kid at the age of 6 to 10 should have.

If you want it to play real games on it - forget it.

For the same price you can also buy a powerful pda phone with all the gadgets and it's not that big then

Running XP will work, but it will be so slow that it's almost be useless.
I am seriously considering this. It's what a laptop should be: portable. It's pretty cheap too, usually laptops that size cost ~2000€ or something. The downsides of it are of course the lack of performance, but I don't think it's going to be much of an issue for me. I wouldn't get it for a only computer though.
Whetever you should get this or not pretty much depends on for what you planning to use this laptop. If you are planning to play LFS on it, then you should look for something else

There are lots of Core Duo 2 base laptops with decent small screens around now for £300-400 which will run Vista properly and make a far faster more usable computer than something like that.
Just a quick note...she already HAS a 3400+ Athlon XP desktop with 1Gb RAM and a nVidia 6600GT gfx card, (can run LFS fine on that )..she just cant decide whether to go with this rather than opt for a Creative Zen...ie, mainly for music/DivX movies, but with the advantage over a Zen of being able to surf the 'net almost wherever she wants, and maybe run Office or similar for school work on the move

Personally, in a straight choice between this and a Zen...No Contest!
Only a few quid more, but so many more features and a lot more functionality. What I would be interested in learning is whether there are any USB ports on the thing, as there are some great 'pocket' hard drives out there at silly prices for quite a big capacity...(250 Gb for £50...and it will fit in your pocket!! )

[edit] TBH, I think it would be great for somebody that has a decent PC on the desk, but would like the portability of a laptop without all the encumbrance of everything that goes with it, if you dont _really_ need it. (might even think about one to sling in my work bag...while away the long breaks...listen to mp3's in the bus.....mmmm sod it, Emmy can wait...I WANT ONE!!!!!) [/edit]

If by "small", you mean 7" then your wrong :P

Been looking into small laptops for a friend - £650 is about the cheapest i can get a 12" laptop for (£700 for a rather nice Laptop + Tablet thingy though...)

Seems that anything above or below 15.4" makes stuff rediculously expensive...

I don't consider 15,4" and 3kg small. Atleast not in the same way as 7" and 1kg.

ssshhh...I've been telling the missus that 7" is massive for years!!!!

What do you want it for though? I've found that anything smaller than that ends up with an awkward keyboard and annoyingly small screen. Personally I think 14" is about the perfect size for a carryable but AFAIK they were only ever made by Apple in the iBook, which still go for upwards of £350 on ebay.

Bah, and people yell at ME for inappropriate content that they read! You have a daughter that started this thread and made that!

I can just picture it now...

"Eww! DAD!"

Yeah, but _I_ was referring to the gap I leave between the car bumper and the garage wall...It is only YOUR mind that can read anything else into it
Right... and I was talking about the length of... my sock.. :hide:
It looks like a fun laptop as long as it is not your only pc. I think i'll buy one of those. They're good for console stuff, internet (although the resolution isn't enough for most websites), e-mail and it's a perfect e-book reader. You should have an other computer if you do more then those tasks (like playing LFS)

Most small laptops cost more. Only some 15,4" laptops are cheap, but that's indeed big for a portable device. I have seen Chineese 12" laptops (WXGA so much higher resolution) for a little more then 500 euro's with coreduo. If the quality of those laptops isnt't too bad I forget about eee. You should be able to play LFS on those.
I already have a PC that is more than capable of running LFS, neverwinter nights 2 and can run Test drive unlimited with all the settings turned down low...
If and when I do get a laptop, it will be for on the move, so when I go on holidays or whenever I'm away from home so I can stay in contact with my friends and family... as for china, I may be going there in 2009, so I might just wait till then and buy one while I'm over there
The saddest part, is the only reason I'd want a laptop, is to play like HL2 or something at school
Oh well..been reading a review in my latest edition of one of my comics (computer mags, to the uninitiated!) and they recommend slinging in an extra Gb of RAM (Expansion slot is already supplied!) for £20 or so, and an 8Gb SD card...will give you a nice little machine for about £260-£270...
They ALSO say that for the price, it isn't just the market leader in it's class...it's the ONLY option for less than a grand!!!!

Dont tell Emmy, but it looks like that's ONE Xmas prezzie already sorted!

zOMG!!! I just said I am gonna buy Emmy a laptop...now she will overclock it, blow it up, and want me to buy her a go-kart!!!!

haha.

I'm sure she's a bit more sensible than that

I never even knew these existed until looking at this thread... So much for keeping up to date with technology.
Been thinking about getting one of these myself, for coding and a little 'net browsing, possibly occasional work usage when a "real" laptop isn't appropriate, over a macbook for a few reasons:
* SSD
* Small form factor would be dead handy at a few customers as there's often not much room where their racks are located
* Extremely hackable (hardware and software wise)
* Good build quality (Asus also make the macbook incidentally)
* I have a Macbook Pro from work that I can use for beefier applications, including virtualisation on the road

The only things that put me off are the screen res and potentially the keyboard size. Has anyone actually got one, or used one for a little while? I'm seriously, seriously interested and the various people I know on the net who'd go for this are waiting for someone get to get one first. Sooo, here I am, asking everywhere
