Well I see it this way, there is no point of having perfect cup if there is nothing to drink

Maybe it is bit same as with gfx in games, I don't care if game looks crap if there is idea behind it enough good and interesting but for some other gfx is main thing.

I guess only drama I ever have enjoyed was It came along with a spider, maybe it was enough weird (sure, there was times where I wanted to fast forward)
Quote from deggis :Drama has concentrated on pretty much that since Ancient Greece...

Not it hasn't. Most of the superduper hollywood movies have at least 5 scenes like - no, I love you, don't go, you are so, I must go sacrifice myself for you, nooo.

I like drama, but this certainly isn't it, it's more like comedy.
I consider movies like Das Boot, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest or Paths of Glory a proper drama. But many people nowadays say these are boring. Emotions are ofcourse important, but good movies don't tell the emotions out loud, they show it to you.

Whenever someone tells me they've bought a 60ft plasma TV and a THX sound system signed by George Lucas himself I smile and say "Awesome", but I'm actually thinking "What the hell are you going to watch on it that doesn't suck?".

That's why cinemas are still in business. You only need that sort of hardware a couple of times a year, if that.

Quote :“There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it.”

From this quote alone, it is clear that Hitchcock had a profound understanding of the human psyche. He knew that the imagination was far more powerful than any image he could render on the screen, and this knowledge was key to his remarkable ability to manipulate his audience. Graphic violence was rarely featured in Hitchcock’s films; the audience instead used their imagination to ‘fill the gaps’.

I believe new directors have forgotten basics and rely on special fx or something
Quote from JTbo :I hate drama movies

I got that already but if we go back to you previously said:

"Modern movies concentrate on human emotions, feelings. It is incredible how much time they do spend on squeezing every feeling out from every scene, unlike movies at 80's where they actually managed to do things.

Now I believe situation is this as modern teenagers are all emotion driven, so they make movies for these emo teens."

Still don't get how that relates to the Gone Baby Gone movie which is the reason (?) why this whole conversation started. That's just nonsense, I really got the feeling you don't watch movies often in general.

Quote :And today all they produce is drama or drama labeled as action

Rambo 4 ought to be good old action with no needles artificialities:

Not expecting Oscar class performances though (excluding the ragdolls).

Quote from Lible :Not it hasn't. Most of the superduper hollywood movies have at least 5 scenes like - no, I love you, don't go, you are so, I must go sacrifice myself for you, nooo.

JTbo's original quote was "modern movies concentrate on emotions", like movies previously didn't do that... And I replied to that.

That kind of soap opera you described you find in bad movies.

Quote :I consider movies like Das Boot, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest or Paths of Glory a proper drama. But many people nowadays say these are boring. Emotions are ofcourse important, but good movies don't tell the emotions out loud, they show it to you.

Yes. People who just wants everything to be served in a silver plate are generally either not enough interested about movies or haven't just seen enough movies. I mean taste evolves, usually with age but more you see, more you understand and more you see difference between a crap movie and a good movie. Just like wine (or beer ) and food, the more you drink/eat, the more you can recognize difference in the taste. Sama applies to music too.

Umm, this went maybe bit too philosophical...

There really is not much worth to watch

And by trailer that movie looks very much like series called Lost, human relationship represent in slow motion like viewer would be an amoeba and could not pick anything by himself.

I think Lible put it really nicely:
Quote :Emotions are ofcourse important, but good movies don't tell the emotions out loud, they show it to you.

Also imagination needs food, modern movies don't leave much for that department, every emotion is represented like you would represent things to some less capable of thinking than average joe.

Soon there happens as much in movies as does in bold and the beautiful, you need to watch 3 sequels to see guy actually sip from coffee that is on table, there are so many emotions to express

I prefer Conan the barbarian, cutting head does not need to be explained troughfully, it is Conan he is barbarian and that is about it, let's see adventure

I recommend Last Year in Marienbad. Its just your type of movie.
Nice, nihil.

just saw "I Am Legend" and im really impressed actually. This is a movie one of a kind. Altough i havend watched Cloverfield yet i would put it into the same category of movies. I cant find any word to discribe it...maybe "intense" but even this would't come close to the impression i've got after watching this one

What do you think?

watched this today and it was absolutely epic, really really liked it.
Naughty Deko....it isn't out in the UK until Boxing Day!!!

Got to admit that you are right though...just seen it myself and it is definitely the best Will Smith movie I have seen...in fact, I would go so far as to say it was a damn good movie all round! Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Eh, first 2/3 were awesomely eerie and desolate. Great production design and some very good acting from Smith. The third act was a total disaster, though. The spiritual angle made no sense and was horribly handled, the idyllic ending is a betrayal of both the book's and the original screenplay's endings and is there for no other reason than to make the apocalypse not quite so depressing.

And I really wish they'd kept the bad guys intelligent. I know they made hints toward some kind of social order among them, but in the book and the original screenplay the bad guys are vampires (not zombies) and are simply very determined people (not horrible piles of screaming CGI mush). They have a clear social system that simply has little use for non-vamp humans except as food. It's a much more interesting enemy, particularly their ringleader (Cortman, his name is).

The CGI of the baddies really is abominable.

But anyway, worth seeing for the first 2/3 alone.
Word. I agree completely DWB. Funny, i completely blocked out the last 1/3 of the movie in my mind till i read that. Hence, i found it a very enjoyable movie.

Merry Christmas, bring on Jan movies!
That dog should get an Oscar, btw.
AVP2's going to suck

The original was quite stupid along with poor character development.

I expect no better from the sequel seeing as how Hollywood is bent on just making money instead of making art.

FINALLY someone thinks the same idea as I do and btw I am Legend is COOL liked the acting from smith and ending kinda confused me i though he was gonna stay alive but no he had to die what a shame

I'm a movie critic. I have to look at the "art" side of films and cannot recommend a film based on "how cool it looks" or "how big the explosions are".

Ironically this kind of thinking have kinda made molded my opinion to match a good majority of the revered critics.

Also it is with this kind of mindset that the "entertainment" side of the film has shifted from heavy action and explosions to deep character and drama. I use to love AVP, now I hate it.

Sorry I didn't watch I am Legend (but someone ruined the ending for me already). I watch the Golden Compass.

IMO GC lacked character. All the characters in the movie were too static. LoTR and Narnia was good because of their development. Not because of originality. GC had a formulated story that could have pulled it off if it had enough character or imagination. But it didn't have enough of both
Saw Sweeney Todd today. Pretty brilliant, and much better than I've come to expect from Tim Burton over the last decade.

Helps that he was working with good source material, I guess.
