Enlist in the army and go to Iraq. There you will plenty of fun in form of multiple adversaries and RPGs.

EDIT: Graphics and immersion are great too but respawning takes a lof of time in case you die.

Free? Yes.
Good? Debatable.
No download? Not a hope in hell. Unless you count Runescape, but nobody does.

Archlord is free, and I think RF Online is too. Beta tested both, not impressed by either.
They just announced today that Fury (which actually sounded alright when it was released) is also going free with that old "pay to make your character better" deal.

Hellgate: London doesn't have a subscription, but I think you still need to pay for the box.

Planeshift will be, but that might be your thing as it is not your typical Diablo/WoW hack'n'slash type of game, but actual role playing game where point is to play role.

Still in Alpha stage, I think those who really are up to such / capable of playing it right, can find it with Google so no link
