Hotlapping: Warming the front tyres
This is going to sound silly, but...

Looking at some hotlaps today I noticed everybody cuts the wheel to full lock while on the throttle to warm up their front tyres. I can't get my wheel to do this fast enough (and when I try, I get a horrible loud ZIP! noise from the gearing!) and so I end up just ploughing my nose into a wall or something stupid. So:

1) Do these people have some sort of bizarre control scheme where they can instantly hit the steering lock?
2) Are they doing something else to keep the car pointing the right way that I haven't noticed?
3) Is there another, less drastic way of warming up the fronts before starting a lap?

I'm just bored of having to write off my first lap due to cold tyres...
I've noticed it also and I would just say it's a skill to do it right. Nothing too fancy

Why not just do it dragracer style & sit in a cloud of smoke for a few seconds?
an interesting way of doing this is via pausing the game ... then turning your wheel all the way and unpause the game

1) it might look like ripping the wheel rapidly to full lock in a replay, but actually it works just fine when turning the wheel smoothly and slowly. My dfp doesnt make any noise.
2) no need because the car will understeer and slip over the front tyres even with low speed.
3) see 2) try to do it with half throttle or less so the car is easier to control.

Some people have faster play with low FF on their wheel.... but the easiest and safest way to do it is if you have a few turns to mess around on before the point you have to get fast for the start of the lap.

Basically, if I try to do it, I do it while in a turn, and while my wheel is already turned halfway, then I just crank it down hard and induce understeer. Simple, and controllable.

But really, some people prefer getting their tires warmed up this way, I really don't see that much of a difference in times (for long tracks). But do 2 laps, not try and do it all in 1 lap like some of the 'hotshots'
ah yes i do this sometimes. its not all that hard. Slow down a bit, turn all the way to the left or right and hit the gas. i dont see how it could be hard :P

are you using a DFP with half a million degrees of lock by any chance?
I've only got as much turn as an MSFF allows, but I just turn the force-feedback off when I do the full-lock to full-lock thing.
I do it the way Tweak mentions with my DFP set to 720°.

I do think the ability to do this seems a bit odd. To me, it seems like it is related to the tire grip issues that have been discussed so often. It just does not seem right that I can get the tires to break loose like that at reletively slow speeds, and keep them sliding for so long.
FXR, blackwood, reverse till the revs hit the red zone, throw to first and burnout away. THen just drive the 2 corners full speed. Heats up the fronts and rears nicely.

I just press ESC go to to menu which disables all force feedback effects so I can turn to lock in like half a second. works pretty well.

Or if you have the option (like I have) turn off FF on the wheel using a button right slap in the centre.
I think it would be easier if the wheels were pre-warmed, at least for the slick cars. What the hell, in hotlap sessions the wheels should be pre warmed in every car, maybe with an option to turn off for extremely purist ones. IMHO

All tyres in LFS are pre-heated to 20°C less then their optimum temerature. I Guess you mean pre-heated to their optimum temperature.

This has been suggested before and it was found that the best way is to start from the pits... You then have the whole track for warming up the tyres...
