Glitching
Hi. A technical one for you all.

My LFS has started Glitching. Every couple of minutes, with seemingly good regularity, LFS glitches. Only for about a second if not less, it freezes. Then carries on as if nothing ever happened. This is during net games, there is no break to the internet traffic. And like I said, once it's happened everything carries on a normal. It is very annoying. I have recently installed BF2 Special Forces, but have done a massive clean up of my system. Got over 6 gig free on the hard disk, regularily return 70-80 Fps, and it's only just started happening.

I really don't want to have to restall. I hate doing that. It's just really annoying.

I have turned all background apps, and with the system clean tryed to get rid of exstrenious programs and files. I'm pretty sure I don't have a virus, (AVG'ed it only the other day).

Any ideas?

Also, but I think I know the answer to this, the throttle keeps cutting out on me. Just momentarily, but it's getting worse. It's almost like a tration control kicking in feathering the throttle, but it happens anywhere on a circuit. I am assuming my mouse is suffering from extending periods of BF2 hammering and the constant pressure that LFS needs. But it's not giving jip anywhere else.

HAs anyone else experianced this. Do you reckon I am correct in my assumption?
In options, try increasing the Minimum Sleep value gradually.
Thanks been trying it, will see how it behaves tonight.

What does that do by the way?

this happens when you have a poor connection to a given server. its called lag, and its usually measured in milliseconds. on the server selection screen, i believe it is referred to as the servers "ping".

basically, the ping time is the amount of time that it takes a packet of information to travel from one computer to another.

the reason that you get the pause is because while the program is running on your computer, the host server is what is keeping track of the information from all the competitors. so, pause is from the remote client (your) computer waiting to get information from the host server. once it recieves taht info, it updates the information on your computer and typically results in a "jump" in location of all the players.

this poor online game performance could also be from an overloaded server caused by too many connections at once. the more connections at once, the more the load is on the server computer.

my advice is make sure that the only program using your internet connection is LFS. if you multiple computers sharing a connection to the internet, then that basically cuts your connection speed in half (overly simplistic, but gets the point across). also, choose different server. and remember low ping times are better. i personally try and stay on servers that have pings below 250ms.

does it happen when you play offline?

if it does, then it could be something on your machine that's causing the problem. installed any new programs around the time that it started happening? Any program updates? Also, antivirus programs and antispyware programs can cause performance issues in games, so if you have those running, you might want to try disabling those. and if the problem continues, maybe try defragmenting your hard drive.
Quote from thisnameistaken :BTW: "Glitch" is not a verb.

glitch can be used as a slang verb.
Quote from strato12345 :doesnt happen offline nor in my own server. just slept over nite and it started..

defragmenting?

well, i'm out of ideas then. sorry

oh, and defrag is a way to optimize the harddrive so that related files are next to each other on the disk, which increases the read speed off of the disk. but since you're problem doesn't happen offline, that's probably not the issue here.

I experience similar stuff when something other then lfs is doing lots of disk access, such a downloads etc.

Try raising the priority of lfs (task manager, processes tab, right click lfs process, "set priority")

I've actually never experienced lfs lagging in such a way, only lag i've ever had that's network lag in the usual way is the standard "server lags everyone, race starts and everyone gets back from lag having rolled into a ball of cars", i mean even when i actually lag enough to get dropped/timed out by the server, i never really notice anything like stutter or freezing.
Was a solution found for this problem?

Offline LFS runs fine, but every server I have tried to join (max 50ms) LFS is broken up into 5 second sections with a half second freeze inbetween.

I am returning the lfs after a 1 year break and I have never had this problem before. My pc is much faster than it was last time I ran lfs and so is my internet connection. I have experienced lag before and the effect is quite different. With lag you carry on fine but the other cars tend to leap to their correct positions when the server syncs up again. With the problem I am having you just stop, pause, then start again from the same position with no leap forward.

I haven't tried raising the minimum sleep value though so I will try that tonight.

Thanks

Maxim

Edit - I increased the minimum sleep to its maximum value of 20ms but it still happens
Thanks AndroidXP, all sorted.
