Do you think this will be OK for LFS?
There I am browsing for a new PC when I spotted this
I am so far behind with computer technology....
what do you want to do with it? take over the world?

thats got an amazing spec but has a price tag to match, depending on wahat you want it for you could save a hell of a lot

what games do you play

If you want a PC priced up for you for £500, then just say the word lol.

It's a nice PC but frankly £4.4k seems a LOT.

I'd kill for the bits, though.
1,300 GB hard drive

OMG THATS LIKE 1.3 TERABYTES - who would use so much storage?

I need to lie down

Sometimes you need to keep a backup of the internet...

mrfell- You're in about the same situation as I was a month ago. I had no idea what the state of the industry was like. I was shocked to find out how cheap computers have gotten. For instance, a stock Dell xps 420 will run LFS just fine. Consider that when you look at specs. As I understand it, LFS does not use multiple "cores" in the processor. There's no real gain in a quad core system.

Here's a typical example:
Dual core 2.33 GHz
2 Gigs memory
512mb graphics card

These are keywords to look for. Obviosly more is better, but I wouldn't worry about it unless you find a good deal.

aaah... I see
Tri-sli is usely without good drivers, plus build that yourself would be around £2000-3000.

P.S. the picture cut the VAT out, would be £3,622.36 inc VAT

Oh good God... I agree with Jakg.. I'll kill for bits like that
Is this one a better buy??

The same price as the laptop I got in the summer with much better spec.

My archive is 0,972 TB (which obviously is not large enough). I really could use another 0,328 TB.

Its a laptop, duh.

I (well, my Dad) just spend £600 on a Core 2 Duo laptop with integrated graphics, and yet for the same price i could built a PC with an 8800GT and a faster Core 2 Duo in it.

The PC is nice, but £1,150 for a PC without a monitor is a bit much. Especially as each of those pictures is of a different PC (ie one has water cooling, and one has 8800's in SLi), and yet none ar of the PC you are ACTUALLY buying.
Personally I would not touch eBay for a PC or components. Saying that I have a friend that gets quite a lot of components off it and has not really had any problems.

If you are against going for a brand like Dell but are not confident enough to build your own you can look at sites like ebuyer.co.uk, overclockers.co.uk & aria.co.uk. They have pre-built systems too.

Just a quick look in oc.uk and I found this:

Titan Gamer Extreme Intel Core ... .40GHz SILENT DDR2 System

and to Jak... sometimes it is unavoidable to use anything other than a laptop. I need to get a laptop sometime in the future that can handle Ableton that I will use when I DJ with so unfortunately ill also have to shell out, but what I am paying for is the mobility and practicality which would be impossible with a desktop. But yeah, if you can get a desktop.
Is Alienware anygood?

I think they have decent computers but are way overpriced.

Alienware makes awesome computers, but you can build one to the same spec as a certain Alien computer for about 30% the cost.

Well, I have 1.4 TB... and I'm thinking I'm gonna need more. I use 4 320 Gb Seagate drives in RAID and one 120 Gb lone, old, WD drive.

The 120 Gb is the same size as my tablet's HDD, so I use that drive solely to keep an image of my tablet's drive, should something happen.

The 4 320 Gb drives are setup in a 0+1 RAID, which means the drives are setup in 640 GB "pairs." One 640 GB drive is mirrored on the other 640 GB drive so that I constantly have a backup of everything on my desktop too. If a drive fails, simply pop in another and it rebuilds the array using the other disk seamlessly, and without data loss.

So I'm really only able to use 640 GB of the 1.4 TB, but I'm kind of an "I-don't-want-ANYTHING-to-happen-to-my-data-short-of-Armageddon" freak :P
With 4 drives I would never have some sort of backup, whether it is RAID 1+0 or RAID 5 or just a nightly backup to an external or spare drive.More info on RAID levels if you want to read up.
