I actually did a 3 (or was it 5) lap race on the ring in GPL the other day. My fastest lap was only 9:30 or something and the race was boring because someone was always spinning and you had to wait for them otherwise you would be racing on this track all alone which isnt fun.
When I used to play rFactor, I drove on this track a lot, and made plenty of comparisons with the real track. It really is a very good representation. In another forum I frequent, there are a lot of rFactor players who have driven the real track, and they all consider this rFactor track to be the most realistic in any game yet.
YOU might not have to bother about it, but the developers would. I suggest you search the many long-winded topics about modding so that you can be exposed to all of the aspects discussed previously. That will save you from asking the same questions that have been asked a thousand times already.
when the first conversion for GTL came out the servers where always loaded and that for a very long time. Of course races are different compared to shorter tracks since the grid tends to spread even more but it is still possible to have great fights. This concept is different to any other tracks and its one of the things i really miss in lfs, also it would be the perfect benchmark presumed it would based on real data.
Most of the people playing lfs tend to run short pickup races and we all know lfs is the best game to do so. But still, there are a lot of people around that want to race at longer tracks but unfortunately they are in a minority.
Honestly, it makes no difference for me if i drive a couple of laps (lets say 2-5) on a long track with a total race length of 5- 10 minutes or if i'd drive a bunch of laps (10- 15) on a short track which would roughly take the same amount of time.
Besides, just in case youre not up for serious racing you can also drive around with some buddies and pretend you have a trip to some place using the country road . I wouldn't call it cruising but its something like that in the end. If somebody makes a misstake then everyone is waiting for him in order to stay together, push eachothers limits and have some nice battles.
Anyway, i doubt its gonna happen on the official way, maybe if lfs is finished one day and open for mods.
From doing it a lot on GT4 and EPR, I thought it was rubbish for racing; no room. The whole fun is that knowing the right lines determines the difference between "death" and a good time. Or Jeremy and Sabine. (Cultural reference for the Brits).
It is a great track. And most RL racers do seem to like driving fast cars fast, not just racing. It's a shame though.
It's a great challenge for endurance races, because the track is so difficult to learn, and the distance to the pits mean you can't be too rough with the car.
For racing, it's not a bad track. The real track hosts mostly endurance races for touring cars, which always features very good action.
The track featured on GT4 must be pretty bad. The real track - and the rFactor track - has plenty of room in most sections.
Are they? Look up the distance per track. There are quite a few lot long tracks in the top 10.
(Though Fe Black doesn't count into the racing statistics. It's still popular though.)
I realize that the request has been there forever and came up often enough to even go on my nerves, but that doesn't mean it's a bad idea. I simply can't see why we shouldn't have 1970's LMP-cars on a Nordschleife 1000km race. The Nordschleife was a very popular place for touring car races until the late 80s and no GPL-driver in their right mind has ever complained that the Nordschleife is unmanageable or not a great drive.
The continous Nordschleife-threads are also getting on my nerves, but the request itself is valid.
And by the way, saying LFS shouldn't have more tracks due to lack of usage of the ones it has is a little bit on the wrong train of thought, I think. Personally I don't drive as much LFS as I'd like to because LFS lacks content. And yes, I've done XRG on Fe Black Rev and LX6 on As GT Rev.
[Edit]
And a more constructive note: The Nordschleife originally was part of the old Nürburgring, which was composed of the Nordschleife and the lesser known Südschleife. For the GPL-drivers, the Südschleife connects to the GPL-version at the 180°-turn after start-finish. The Südschleife is nowadays gone and decayed (there are still a few tarmac strips somewhere in the Eifel, if you know where to search) and I'd hazard the guess that there are no legal claims on it by any party. I believe it would be a great concept to use a simulator to let old and gone tracks arise from the ashes in digital form. That would bring quite a lot of publicity since there is no other way to experience that piece of motorsport-history anymore.
If you want to take a look, look at this link. Sorry, there are no english websites about this track. But I discovered an article about it in the english magazine "Motorsport" here.
But remember FE Black is what the CLC servers use, so it's inevitable that they'll be racking up the laps. I'd like to compare those laps with the average race time for that track.
I also admit that the longer tracks are used by leagues. That's about the only reason to add new ones. I've never had the free time (or skill really) to enter a league, so I guess my own experience is sort of jading me here.
But long tracks don't make all that interesting racing, especially one that's as fast as Nordschleife. A load of servers would all switch to it ("cuz itz teh ring!11!") but I think the racing would be boring. Once the leaders start to seperate, that's it - hotlapping til the end. The same is true of the longer Aston configs. FE Black might be a bit different because it has fewer straights.
Just my opinion though. I bet all the Ring fans will commence flaming
make replicas of real tracks, just change the scenery and throw in a few random detours and pits off the main ring... brilliant, i should get a million dollars...
Nurburgring: Defo not before general track modding for the public - We'll have people wanting more.
If the devs want a Nurburgring style track - why not attach it to an existing one (Blackwood - just before second last corner, to the left?), have a twisty bit like the Nurburgring and bring it back.
However, I agree about the length of track being an issue - would only be good really for endurance races.
^ROFL, just keep pressing right...
but you would have a friend do that, or else you would be too sore to race... and another mod would be: to have the ability to TYPE the values for those kind of things...
What's the point of a 26 hour race? And an idea - get off the highway just before the BL1 pits and get on it again on the back straight. DO dunno, 100-200 meters or a bit more and then take off into the mountains/fields and make another 10+ kilometers long track there. Sorted
in fact, "day" was added a few versions ago, Scawen would only have to add night. :P
Othe than that, while the Nordschleife has some sort of mythical appeal, and I thoroughly enjoyed lapping it in GT4 and GTL, I too don't think that it would be a worthy addition to LfS. The huge scale the project would have would simply not be justified by the few people who would hotlap it, and concerning racing, there won't be any, at least on public servers, because the average public LfSer doesn't like whole races as long as one single lap on the Nürbi.
It's not that I would complain if it was in (especially with a BMW M series Ring-Taxi to go with it), but I think it's unrealistic to expect the Ring being done by the devs.
