Sometimes this happens because some routers don't allow you to connect to your own IP address - you can connect to all IP addresses in the world except your own one. I am assuming your friends are remotely connected on the internet but your laptop is on the same network as the host.

The solution in that case is to use "join specific host" and "local network" and type in the IP address on the local host. The local address probably starts with 192.168...

To get your hosts's local IP address :

Windows 98 / ME - Start... Run... "winipcfg"
Windows XP - Start... Run ... "cmd" THEN type "ipconfig"
