but my reasons are
the physics
some of the cars
the togetherness of the community BIG factor
and of course the BIGGEST factor is the online easyness and it works well on my old computer
Initially, it was the online racing and the ease of getting online. But I was an S1 demo racer at the time. I didn't purchase during my short stint (2 months) with S1. It was the first time I had gone online with "gaming".
The online novelty was starting to wear off and I was ready to head back to my NR2003 offline (I was dialup) when BANG! Scawen released the S2 demo. The first race of the S2 demo was what sealed it for me. I decided to purchase that first race. Thus, it would be physics for me since I was going to quit with the online and go back to NR2003 offline if the S2 demo hadn't been released.
For me it was the physics combined with the ALPHA tag. For a program in alpha state Live For Speed is truly amazing and it keeps getting better and better. The choice was simple, pay 30 quid for a buggy retail product with worse physics than my school grades or Live For Speed for 24 quid and the satisfaction of an already great product that has a development team geared up to keep making it better.
The first time I played I got severe understeer and just let go of the keyboard in shock "wow that was supposed to happen but I wasn't expecting it"
that thread reminded me that: it was Giga show (on CNBC then) when thay reported LFS. That guy took the slowest car, XFG then, hotlapping at BL, and at first turn went straight ahead of the track and I just new that this is something different from racegames they were playing there
hm... i do not pick it over other simulations. its just something other games cannot offer. other games have other advantages and i play some of them as well.
lfs is good when it comes to: "i want to do a quick race online." you are in a race in like 2 minutes. its very straight forward through its spartanic car/track variations, so you do not have to mess around.
other games are more open and you can drive almost every car you like on almost every track you want, with the disadvantage of waiting much much longer until you are ready for a race, and also the messing with the right mods you need to have installed. and to be honest these games give a shit about licenses and this for years now without any big problem so far. (forget the license-fact when reading about mods for lfs, its just plain bullshit, the only reason we do not have mods in lfs is, the developers want to do everything by themselfs and they are not willing to create new content. its NOT about the license costs.)
for a league environment LFS does not offer the same comfort as other games and needs a lot of pre/after work after each event, which kind of drove me crazy sometimes in the past when doing LFSCAR league.
BUT STILL, its fun for pickup or single event races with its limited car/track selection possibilities...
The only reason we do not have mods ATM is because LFS isn't finished and the devs have hinted several times that modding MAY become part of LFS but certainly not before later stages in LFS development.
You state a lot of things as facts while they are nothing more than assumptions on your end. i don't think you have the ability to read the dev's minds so how would you know they are not willing to create new content?
Oh, and BTW, there have been mods for rFactor that got a cease and desist order so your statement/fact about licenses doesn't hold up.
yea... later stages maybe when S3!!! is released in 5 years...
they did not bring much into the game the last 2,5 years, so why should this change. (BF1 as a present from BMW and intel, and AGAIN an open wheeler with that new junior class thing...)
as i said earlier, LFS is a good game as it is now, because its not complicated to start a race and so on... but i do not think there will be PLENTY of new stuff in the game for the next 2 years. (if i am wrong, i would be glad)
see the fact, the devs made a good game, they earn lot of money, have fun as it is and only bring really new stuff once a year.
and btw. when they brought the BF1, they killed the FO8 in the same moment for a long time (until patch Y... now its fun again)
thats true, but who gives a shit, if one mod/track is not available anymore, there are plenty of others. there are like 20 open wheeler mods, 10 nascar mods. its not likely all of them got hunted down and they got NO desist orders for tracks as far as i know. you can find almost every real racing track... (sometimes in different states of time like 1955 to 2008)
some of the modder teams (like iDT) even got an official partnership for their mods like the ChampCar mod they did. they are official partner of champcar now.
i don't think LFS should change in the rFactor way but to be honest 1 new car (again an open wheeler...) and a track variation a year is not enough. if they want, they could have plenty of good car/track designs from the community and even test them before releasing them, but they refuse to do so. why? not because the game is not finished, but because they are happy as it is now.
of course there are plenty of improvement suggestions and with the current tempo of implementing it the game will be finished in 2108. the clock runs against this game which is sad, as i have stated before, its a good game.
Obvious really..I only got it for the pit girls in their skimpy bikinis! That and the fact that the racing in CoD4 is silly...2 laps of Shipment and no matter how fast you run, some bugger always shoots you!
I that's how long it's going to take, then so be it. If that's not acceptable for you, so be it.
Still, they have their own reasons to only (possibly) allow modding when the time is right. You're presenting what you think are the reasons as some sort of fact.
If you only consider content valuable then I guess not, I personally feel LFS has changed a lot and has improved significantly because of it.
The BF1 was a deal with Intel, the FBM was a deal with V1/Fortec. And what do you mean with AGAIN an open wheeler? 5 out of the 20 cars are open wheelers. Anyway, I think it's a great addition to LFS and it seems to be a succes. Plus, people are constantly whining about wanting more real cars, there is one.
How do you know how much money they make?
And if you're so dissapointed in the amount of new stuff, how about you make a simulator and show us how easy it is to put out new stuff constantly?
Nonsense. Apart from the oval the FO8 wasn't even popular before the BF1 showed up because it was too hard to control with the physics at that time. It became much better when that particular patch came out because of the physics improvements but people didn't really notice.
Well, considering rFactor is quite different from LFS and neither you or I know how modding is going to be (if it comes anyway), presumably there are legal concerns to take into account, which make me presume the devs give a shit.
Once again, what do you mean again? Just because it's not your cup of tea doesn't make it worthless.
As has been stated time and time and time and time again, because they don't want to. Just because you do not agree with that philosophy doesn't mean the question has to be re-asked over and over again, as there is not going to be a different answer to the same question.
Once again, stop pretending you have all the answers and know every motivation behind every decision.
Not every improvement suggestion is worth implementing.
nothing more to add, you have your beliefs i have mine
i think lfs is a great game, thats why i am still playing it BUT as i said before, the time is running against this kind of philosophy at the moment...
i am not one who is shouting for "real cars" i would be happy if we could have two or three new ovals (short-track, high banked super-speedway, d-shaped oval), a decent stock car for ovals (or a modified FO8 with more HP for indy action) and most important the right drafting/aero physics. in addition an automated pace-car. if this would be in the game, that would be like xmas, new year, birthday and a decent BJ at the same time for me.
i would not need more for the next 5 years really.
every kind of group is waiting for "their" features but the last 2,5 years the only one who got really something were openwheel/circuit racers and cruisers.
drifters, drag-racers, oval-racers, rally-racers all of these guys still wait for a single feature in their favor but what we get is: ANOTHER open wheeler, another circuit-track-variation and "wow"new grafics for south city which were produced by the community a year before... ah i forgot the AI and the clutch...
at least we can abuse the AI now as a pacecar for lap 1
and the clutch wear is something in the right direction... what about motor wear, brake wear, damage effecting the aerodynamic, falling-off parts
The Community, The way the Devs interact with the community, The skinning abilities and most importantly, it actually feels like you're behind the wheel.
It doesn't feel like a game as most other 'sims' do.
@Fischfix: Having car parts fall off would require all of the cars & parts to be remodeled, all the effort put into it wouldn't really reflect the 'fun' factor.
sooner or later they need to remodel it because falling off parts is a standard in lot of simulation games sins 1995, but yes, its not the most important thing imo...
Because the only racing 'sim' I tried before LFS was GT3. It was quite a revelation for me. Then you learn to know some people in the community, and you're stuck for a few years.
What sold me was the first time I tried the hothatch (was it in the first version?), finally a racing game with realistic fwd. The rest of the physics wasnt detailed enouth for me to think I needed to own the full version (I did try it every other patch or so) until mid s2 when the tyre physics took a giant leap forward.
LFS biggest strength is the agile development method. Release early -release often. And the teams ability to keep the overall quality even, postponing features until they fit in the concept. Even when I diddn't like the game (so much) I knew that it would become good if they continued. (I also like that they can afford to skip cheesy effects like falling off parts)
The pricing is also awsome, I know I can't be fooled buying an obsolete product, since what I own gives discount on the next version. If I was a demo drifter I could skip two beers at the pub and get the precious XRT (disregarding the fact that most demo drifters are too young to buy beer at the pub)
