Yet another movie making question (sound stuttering)
Hi all..

I've just tried a recording of an LFS replay (snippet of, anyway) and the sound stutters like a bitch! I notice in the screen that LFS reports 3.x FPS(!) During the replay without fraps running, this is closer to 25.

I've uploaded the test video here (2.3Mb). It's only a few seconds long and crappy res but is only a test for now.

Am I royally screwed due to the ingame FPS I'm getting? (I don't get much more than about 30 even when driving alone anymore ) I have successfully made some smooth videos with decent sound in rFactor (only other game I really play) albeit that was exported by the hit-n-miss built-in rF video export function then edited / reencoded.

After directly exporting from fraps, the resulting AVI fails to play in VLC. I get sound (still fscked) but no video. I can only see the video if I play it in Vegas (7) and in VLC once I've reencoded it (as Xvid in this case) but as you can see from the test.. it's bollox!

I've done the 'play at half speed, double it in the video editing app' bit and reduced LFS' res to 800x600 but alas, doesn't seem to matter what settings I use, I always get the same (or there abouts) results. I used this guide to set the Xvid config stuff.

Anyone got any tips on how I can create videos from LFS with the box I have (AMD3000+, 1Gb RAM, FX 5900XT gfx card)? I do plan to upgrade this very soon, but thought I'd ask as there seems to be some pretty good video experts here and maybe I'm just missing something

Ian
Your 3.5 FPS is the problem that will NOT let you even think about making movies, try recording from a proper PC, not atari 2600
its 2008 FFS
all I can say - this is not a video making machine (EDIT : Anymore )

SALUTATIONS...

Thanks squid.. at least I know not to bother now

I guess most of this is caused by needing to run fraps. Albeit very low quality (wasn't meant to be a "production movie").. this vid (2.8Mb) was done on the same box (running same specs) but didn't need to use fraps.

Granted, this box isn't top-spec by any means today.. but it's primarily a coding / 3DS / music making box which serves its purpose very nicely

I'll get around to upgrading soon.

It COULD work if you record with no sound in 800x600 @16 bit with standard textures, LOD detail at middle of the settings bar, no more than 2 cars in the screen at x.250, limited to 10 fps, and in previous patch, patch Y is a bit slower for some reason...
but do you REALLY want to make a movie in such conditons

Hah.. not really

I'll wait until I upgrade before considering making an LFS vid

Turn down AA and AF. Maybe helps

it's not on, did you even look at the video?
Maybe the download link didn't work?
giving advice without seeing the problem is...ehm.....yeah...
Actually, AA / AF is a major contributor to the problem, thanks Kniebeejs

It was set to x2Q AA / x4 AF. Turned both of these off and the game while fraps wasn't running jumped up to 45+ FPS and even with fraps running, was hitting ~25-30fps.

My test didn't come out particularly well. I need to play with Vegas to work out doubling the play rate (literally just doubling it made the vid play 1.5 times and the audio was jumping, not as bad as the above posted test vid though) so it would seem that it is possible and rendering at a small resolution means that a lot of the lack of AA / AF isn't so noticeable

Ian
You mean the video in the picture had AA and AF????

Yeah. The small res though doesn't look like much of a difference between having it enabled and disabled. Viewing the replay in game shows a massive difference (certainly couldn't drive with AA completely disabled)

I know my box specs aren't "super" nowadays, but before I got it.. my box was a PII 350mhz with 320Mb RAM and 64Mb onboard video (which now runs FreeBSD and functions as my gateway / router / firewall). I'm a coder / system bod primarily, so don't really need a super computer. LFS, rFactor and Pro Evo Soccer are about the only games I have installed as I'm not really much of a gamer.. and only "mess about" when it comes to video stuff.. but I do need to upgrade soon as it'd be nice to get a few more FPS when playing the few games I do have installed

Hi!

My computer is similar to yours (AMD A64 3000+, 1GB RAM, Ati Radeon 9800 Pro). I made this simple video few feeks ago to test my computers ability to record LFS movies with sound: http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?p=625604
I used 4x or 6x AA (sorry, I don't remember ), 16x AF, max LOD, 848x480 resolution (16bit) and recorded at half speed in LFS at 25 FPS then set playback speed to 200% in Premiere. I don't know why but VLC doesn't play files created with FRAPS so I always watch them in WMP or in Premiere. Today I tried a replay with a huge grid and it helped a lot when I shut down all other programs. And giving higher priority to LFS and FRAPS might help too. I didn't get high FPS in my last test with max graphics settings but the sound was OK so with lower settings it would be alright I think.

I know how you feel, you poor thing you...
I had a P1 133 MHZ about 7 years ago...was...ehm...shameful
