DDR3 prices plummet
I've been keeping an eye on the price of DDR3 as my next PC will be DDR3 based, and a couple of days ago most sites slashed their prices by 30 quid or so.

Worth keeping an eye on.

Good news, just had a look and the cheapest was £145(2GB) and thats still way to pricey for me

Think I'd want it to drop to around £70 or £80 before I'd sell me DDR2 and buy some DDR3, motherboard can do both.

2 GB of DDR3 1333 MHz, CAS9 - £158

2 GB of DDR2 1066 MHz, CAS4 - £76.

If this was the US i'd throw in a link to the NewEgg Ballistix tracers that are good for up to 1,200 MHz for £20 per GB...

DDR3 still aint worth it.
I'm not a big fan of dancing games.

I've tried, I sat here for 5 minutes trying to work it out but....I don't follow?
Is DDR3 really worth it though?
It's got a higher number, it must be better! Like a sequel!
Quote from Shotglass :what if it had 10 or more village people songs ?

Throw in some Mika, some Scissor Sisters and a free pink boa, and I will crawl through razor wire to get my copy.

It will be, eventually. Its just like the DDR to DDR2 thing all over again.

"Dance Dance Revolution", a game.

What kind of speed difference is there between the DDR3 with high CAS timings and DDR2 with much lower timings?

very little. They have more MHz, but the timings would paint a terrible picture. The timings don't make as much difference on Intel, though, and theres something i dont quite understand about RAM that means its not quite as bad as it looks.

TBH i chose a terrible kit. Spend an extra £20 and your looking at CAS7, although imo DDR3 is only really suitable for the DDR1600, uberfast kits.
With a bit of luck by April when I start building they'll have come down another 40 or 50 quid and the timings will be a bit better.

the latency also depends on the (effective) clock of the rams
the formula is latency = (2*timing)/clock
so a cas 2 ddr1 module at 400mhz will have the same latency as a ddr2 module with cas4 at 800mhz
Ah, great, thanks

That'll make it a lot easier to choose when the time comes.
