Well, yes - technically you're right, but sometimes it's a matter of opinion. For example, given the nature of cave paintings, it is usually difficult to decipher the entire meaning. Poe took what little he could decipher to realize the book he wrote. Just because he did that, does not automatically give him the right to torture anyone he wants though.

The shipwreck was actually a concoction of potions, which was translated to mean a physical ship when in reality it stood for a collection of seashells. Therefore the rules aren't actually something entirely relevant to the argument, thought I do agree that sometimes an unnatural substance is the most effective solution.
