This should be done yearly. Or monthly depending on usage.

1998 just called. They want their Windows support tips back.

to OP: make sure you check you graphical settings in-game, as some may get reset with the new patch updates.
I believe it would be the drivers...I dont knwo how nVidia works but I have an ATi onboard card and I downloaded the newest drivers awhile ago and I used to get around 60-70 FPS..downloaded the drivers and it went down to .1-20...So I asked my uncle and he told me to download Catalyst..since then its worked fine...So maby you both have dodgy drivers...

And I agree...Something has been upped on the requirements...
maybe he race on Blackwood and South city

Remenber in that track all textured Size has changed and eat more GPU
wow, i went to check the post and there heaps of replies, hahaah thanks for all your comments, i will have to do some back dating, and try and see what the prob is, could be drivers, i just dont see this game being more demanding then something like oblivion which runs run on nice graphic levels, where as lfs appears to not require as much yet when i have a couple cars infront of me makes me wanna punch the screen hahaha. but yeah if i cant sort it out, it will be upsetting not to be able to play lfs anymore.

It's still worth checking. Maybe I had changed it instead of gear shift debounce or something :shhh:
Last week I had loads of virii on this PC and then with my crappy PC I got 100fps weird

Guys don't feel bad, there's just something strange in the newer versions. Example:

A while back I ran the game 100+fps at all times with a amd64 3700+/1.5GB DDR400/Radeon 9600Pro.

Now what's very weird, I see a huge decrease in performance with the system I just built. With the same graphics settings, I get about 2/3 the performance, with amd64 X2 2.3ghz/2GB 667mhz/8600GT OC.

Quick question tho, which hogs more resources, having 10 cars in front of ya online, or 10 AI? Cause once I get more than 16-18 AI cars, if they're very near me, my frame rate drops to the mid to low 30's, which is unplayable for me. Am I correct in assuming it's not all the gfx on the screen, but the AI hogging the cpu?
Quote from DHRammstein :Am I correct in assuming it's not all the gfx on the screen, but the AI hogging the cpu?

exactly, the physics calculations for the ai do that, with real racers online it should be much better.

@ chris: i would definitly give the suggestion with x a try and see if its different there. if not i would try rolling back drivers too. i had a small problem with some drivers too but luckily the newest ones fixed it for me.
its quite suspicious that you both are running a 7600 gs, maybe nvidia messed up something there.
Are you driving on auto-gears ? Once I tried auto-gears on patch Y (what a shame) my FPS dropped very low, somewhere like 10-20, on drift server, all drift servers I enter makes my FPS low, seems funny but it's true, just start racing and it will be fine.
hahaha nah not driving auto, all manual, but i dunno, seems theres just something with the updates that has made lfs demanding for my system, all other games still work fine, i will keep playin around with things an see what happens, but thanks heaps for all the replies, its given me alot of insight into this.

right I managed to try patch X and Y in single player last night and compare them. On all tracks (apart from South City) there's an fps drop of between 5 and 20fps. On South City there's a drop of 40-50fps. (by myself on-track, no AI).

To sum it up:
X runs fine, not a problem with it at all.
Y is un-playable at times - especially on South City.

I also tried a few different drivers I was using nvidia drivers that I downloaded from their website in November. I tried the ones on the CD supplied (yes I removed them properly first), and then tried the latest driver.

The latest driver gave an fps boost on Y, but it wasn't noticable at all. from 10-20fps on South City I got a boost of an extra 5fps on top of it.

I'm not quite sure about your case, but maybe you have driver's conflicts? I used to had it on my old PC, and it was giving some very nasty results in some (not all) applications. Maybe uninstalling ALL the drivers and install them again might work?

Thanks. That is curious though. I assume you're using the exact same settings on both? Under the screen, graphics and misc tabs? (I'm sure you did, but it's the only thing I can think of. Worth double checking anyway. Copying the cfg.txt from X to Y should do it.)

I just can't for the life of me figure out why it does that. If there was a legitimate FPS drop we should all be seeing it. The changes to the AI would not impact CPU usage when playing alone, and there aren't really any other major changes I'm aware of. South City getting an FPS drop is normal and expected, but the other tracks... A driver issue only triggered by patch Y is possible of course, but still a bit weird because of the few changes between patches.

Definately not driver conflicts as I re-installed windows due to hardware changes about 3 weeks ago.

Yeah I'm using same settings for both, I even put the full texture option (or whatever it is) on in X and still had a better frame rate than Y. in Y i have them off.

It's a strange problem indeed, as it's a rare thing it seems. It's not my only problem with patch Y (i hate this 'clutch' thing too) but that's not for this thread.

As a side note, I've also tried patch Y with Hyper-Threading on and off on my CPU and had no difference.
