FOV, need your Opinions pls
hi everyone ,

im wondering what would be the most realistic perception we can acheive on my monitor by setting the game FOV. I have a setting of 69° for now, just take a look at the screenshots to have an idea. all opinions are welcome. Thx in advance

"Most realistic" in what sense?

To get real life sized objects you need a FOV of about 30°, to get one that roughly equals human FOV you'd need about 135°. Personally I use 68°, it still gives shows you enough so you're not completely lost while avoiding excessive distortion and exaggerated sense of speed. You're using a widescreen monitor though, so you could increase the FOV a little.
Ah, we both run 1680x1050. I use 105 degrees, it actually helps me drive better.
I used 90, I now use 110.
I have a 19" CRT which uses 1280x1024 resolution. I use FOV of 95, because that is the narrowest value which allows me to see all of the near side mirror in the road cars and both mirrors in the open wheelers. I don't like having to turn my head to see my near side mirror.
I used a wee app that Bob Smith had posted sometime ago for calculating FOV as a guideline initially but I've found that about 72 degrees at a ~50cm distance was fine for the 16:10 monitor I use - gave enough sense of speed with minimum distortion.

thx for your replies guys,

well i dont really care to not be able to completly see to the sides cos i use the look button and i manage it perfectly fine to look around..also , it's more in a sense to get as close as possible to real size objects..i've noticed i can control the car better with 69° FOV (see screenshots) and i have the impression to be in " a real car " as far as the FOV is concerned. the distance between me and the monitor is 60Cm (23.6'').

would u mind to point me to that application pls ?
My FOV is the minimum that will allow me to still see the gauges. Some cars it is 60 and some is 50. I can't drive with that stretched out look as it looks ridiculous, so I am trying to go with realistic look. I have a center mirror that shows the same as the side mirrors, and I don't race SS much, so I don't care if my side mirrors are visible or not.

Your 69 degree view with the widescreen looks very comparable to my 60 with a 17 inch CRT.
well, realistic would be around 180 degrees - as that is field of view which healthy humans "see". So that's that.
But on screen it looks ridiculous, of course.
Real fow would be from your head to screen (if screen is 19' and you're aabout half metre away) about 35-40deg (don't take it for granted) but, and it's big BUT - feeling of speed would be almost nothing and it would feel ur driving a tank.
I set it about 105-110, to feel speed more, see more and to have not much distortion....
I use 70 degrees on a 19" CRT. I'm not fussed about seeing the side mirrors as they don't show anything different than the centre mirror.

Anything more than 70 starts looking distorted, and I get progressively slower the higher the FOV as it makes it much harder for me to judge corners properly.
I must be a good driver because I use 70 degrees too.

Oh, and I have a 19" TFT/LCD or what ever these flat screens are called nowadays.

same monitor 75 degrees
#14 - Osco
22" widescreen and use around 81 degrees..
I use 65 degrees... then put my monitor as close to my wheel as possible.

The distortion of higher FOV numbers kills the immersion factor for me. Kind of like how some ( a lot!) people buy a 16:9 TV and then watch a 4:3 feed stretched to fill the screen, and then doesn't notice that something is wrong with the picture. Just letter box it damn it! The TV thing is kind of a pet peeve.
fov 70 here, 17" screen

Same here. I'm in the middle of a week long arguement with someone at work about this. he says his TV automatically adjusts and it fits fine. Can't seem to understand that it is stretching the picture to fit. You have to subscribe for yet another fee if you want HD, which is the only way we get wide format TV around here. Not subscribed to HD? Sorry, it's stretched and it looks ridiculous....
