Recommend a turn-based strategy game
Fancy getting back into playing turn based strategy, so I was wondering if people had any recommendations?.

I used to play Civilizations alot, and also played a lot of a game, which I can't remember the name of, it was a world war II turn based character game, a bit like commandos, but it wasn't commandos, with pretty good physics, if anyone can remember what game it was, that would be great.

Cheers

Dan,
Some of my all-time favourites games are the 2 first in X-COM: UFO saga... bad news are that you probably find them too many old for playing nowadays
There are some news releases in the saga but they are semi-turn based

So I will reommend you Chess or Spider Solitaire
Might take a look at some of the newer xcom games then....

Hardly turn-based, (but then again, neither is Commandos) but the first thing that springs to mind is Hidden & Dangerous...
Remember it, it was "Silent Storm"

Nice one!
What about the Heroes of Might & Magic saga?
Haven't played it for a while, but Galactic Civilizations II is great.
And you can impulse buy it online.
medieval total war 2 is pretty good, its kind of half turn based, half rts. it can get very addictive.
I'd wait for Jagged Alliance 3 if I were you...
X-COM: Enemy unknown/UFO Defence, whatever the region name is. I say it is better than the games published today (Other games just dont have that 'ok, one more' thing.

The first was the best. You can still get a Windoze compatible version for free (legally too, afaik) from a couple of abandonware sites. If it doesn't run natively in Windows, use DOSBox.

You could also try Steel Panthers.

DOSBox:

Steel Panthers:

edit:
Not strictly about strategy games, but i'd invite you to also have a look at some other olden goldies that have officially been re-released into the public domain.

Fallout 1&2

Arcanum also rocks but all these are adventure&rpg games so not exactly what you are looking for. Great games none the less.
Ahhh. YES, Fallout, might have to revisit that, I remember playing Fallout 2 many years ago
If you fancy something rather silly to play I remember a game I used to play called "Hogs of war" it was turn based but it wasn't a proper strategy game, still good fun though.
If you used to play Civ a lot, there's no reason not to play Civ IV. Freaking awesome game.

Also, if you want to get a lot more technical, Europa Universalis III is pretty impressive.

Yep. I recommend them too. Maybe not the original ones, but the 3 modernized versions (100% free and windows compatible). I recommend looking at the home sites:

Steel Panthers World at War: (WW2 era)

Steel Panthers WW2:

Steel Panthers Main Battle Tank: (post ww2)

They have quite good model for the projectile penetration. SPWAW models e.g flight distance (i.e kinetic energy left), warhead type, armour thickness and impact angle of the projectile to determine if it penetrates the armour.

If you are to more serious TBS war games, then The Operational Art of War must the king of all. 10 years old, but it doesn't matter in that kind of games. Hard to get form anywhere nowadays though. EDIT: Looks like there is a newer version...damn I have missed it totally
I can recommend Brigade E5. It's really well done in it's basics, but being a russian game, quite buggy. Still, it's one of the best turn based games out there IMHO.

After the "Jagged Edge : Hired guns" Which was supposed to be a JA3 actually, I decided not to buy Russian games, and at the same time save me from being a beta tester for my own money

And here we are all of us being not beta but alpha testers for our own money (and so happy indeed )

the difference is we are alpha testers of a British product that was made with care
