Download some F1 mod and learn the track in it. With those really fast cars it is easier to learn the track, you get more repetition in shorter time. And most importantly the F1 car will probably be able to stop before you hit the wall and die painfully in the burning wreck .
I suggest you completely ignore this advice. There are a couple of issues with this, firstly the only decent F1 mods '55 and '88, neither of which are easy to drive on a track you don't know. I'd recommend starting with either a road car (Neil's Corvette) or a FWD racer (Skoda). Most importantly don't treat it like a race track for the first few laps, be extra cautious and always expect that there's an off camber corner with no run off you've forgotten about over that blind crest. Only once you've got a good idea of the corners should you really start to step on it and begin to brake hard and late and be somewhere vaguely near the limits of the cars grip whilst still focusing mainly on driving the line.
Do not look at your times and don't push to hard, a mistake at the 'ring normally means race over there's little run off, lots of elevation and a narrow track means it's easy to catch the grass under braking. If you constantly restart you're never going to get anywhere round this track, a lot of people get frustrated due to the effort required to learn and drive this track but once you've got to the stage where you can drive round it a moderate pace all day long then it really becomes exciting to try and truly master it
I guess I should have been more specific about the car. I defenately mean the the modern, 2000 and forwards cars. The point was that everyone wants to learn the corners quickly and with any street car it will take very long time. The 'vette, for example, being nice to drive (a bit understeery though :razz needs quite slow speeds around the corners and has quite long braking and acceleration distances. With the 'vette you will encounter many situations where you simply remembered the corners wrong and wrecked the car because you were not able to stop/avoid the wall. The natural desire to floor the throttle everytime you see a straight is impossible to keep under control when you are looking of single lap times above 9 minutes. And driving like a grannie certainly isn't fun .
A modern F1 car will from 0-100-0 mph in seconds. The car is stable and you can cruise around the track quite effortlessly. The low laptimes means you get more repetition of the corners.
Of course the best option would be to drive rather slowly around the track, just memorizing the corners but imho that is a bit dull. With modern F1 car you can simply do it quicker. And once you know where the track turns to right and where to left you can move to 'vette/beemer/914 etc. and drive around the track without constantly finding yourself hugging the armco .
The skoda is awful for learning new tracks, the corner entry oversteer is so strong that it can cause serious trouble when you need to stop earlier than you thought. For the 'vette you need to know the braking points, otherwise you will easily overdrive the corners, understeering straight out when the track makes a sudden turn.
Well at the moment I've been running a server. You can find the server info and timetable there. I'll update my forum sig every time the server is on.
Far from optimal but...
Like I mentioned earlier, I could possibly set up a dedicated server too. But If you're interested in meeting at Nordschschschleife with the Bimmers, throw me a message!
