one of ron's problems is that people think of him as a grey suit and as such lump him in with the other "new" type of owners. how many remember him as an apprentice mechanic before working at coopers F1 team with jochen rhindt and then becoming chief mechanic at Brabham. this is a man who for years was haunted by the thought he'd cost jack brabham a gp win by forgetting to switch the fuel injection control cam from warm up before the start, causing the car to run out of fuel. is there any wonder he tries to organise every single aspect of the team to the extent it appears a cold organisation. it's interesting how many people who've worked there talk about how mclaren do have fun and do know how to party, they just dont do it where everyone can see it and comment on it. this is the man who superglued gerhard berger's passport to his bedside table and was rolling on the airport floor with laughter when berger had to turn up carrying the table to passport control.
alos remember that mclaren, like williams, believe in racing and if their two drivers loose the championship because they race each other then thats just tough. far too many teams past and present insist on favouring one driver ( thats not a dig at ferrari btw, they lost championships because they let their drivers compete ultimately with tragic consequences, meanwhile lotus under chapman ensured that andretti was rewarded for his development work with peterson playing the number 2 role)
