Hey, I'd take an MX-5 anyday myself too, and I'm so manly, I have hair growing on my knuckles, and a voice so deep, that I need to talk in squeaky voice for it to be audible to human ears.
The same people that can look past the well groomed individual in the mirror and see the potential hardcore purity of an experience of the MX5 are the same people that can look past LFS' lack of bling and see it as the s-th-uper hardcore sim that it is.
I think that might well be related to the fact the RWD cars are all a lot more difficult to drive, (even with a wheel n pedals, with a keyboard some are impossible). I suspect a good percentage of LFS'ers are not actually old enough to be car drivers in real life.
Doesn't really prove anything though. Apart from the fact that a car designed to be fast under conditions of low grip (ie any rally inspired car) is going to be faster than a car designed for conditions of high grip (ie any race track designed car) under conditions of low grip.
You might as well claim the Evo or Scooby are the best cars around by basing them racing those cars on an ice rink. You're comparing apples and pears, do the same thing again on a completely dry and grippy track and the Evo would be left for dead in that company, so what does that prove? Not a lot really except that a car is only as good as it's design limitations.
No ones denying that Evos n Scoobies are fast cars, especially for what they cost. But all the claims that they are up there with the best RWD sports cars in terms of handling just isn't true unfortunately, especially as they rely entirely on a whole host of electronic gadgetary.
tinvek thats drag racing and proves nothing as the cars are modded, and what does drag racing have to do with handling? want to see a decent modded car that not only drag races but won the ten of the best handling challenge .... here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da4x1aGXUhg soon to be over 1000bhp check this out aswell cause its just awesome http://www.youtube.com/watch?v ... Ulavc&feature=related
and gezmoor you say that they are full of electronic gadgetry but the evo 5 in the wet weather vid is an rs model which is the basic spec one used to base rally cars on so no electronic gadgets at all, not even abs. To say evo's/subarus are full of electronics is just stupid, "ahhhh its from japan it must be full of them" kinda ignorant and stereo typical of you to think so, they have less "gadgets" in them than most of tthe european perrfomance cars out the today. take the new m3 for example asc, abs, electronic dampers, traction control, launch control ect
now im not saying that these cars are faster or better than the supercars in the video because they arent. but put against equal spec'd cars they are faster/better imo
Just proves the point nicely that an inexperienced idiot can hang on to a very powerful four wheel drive car just long enough to set a fast lap time (which as we've been through before is not the same as handling) and then promptly smash into someone who was having fun in a slower but much more fun car
as i said, in ideal conditions there is always something faster out there, if that x1/9 met any of the others on the motorway when its quiet and dry, it would be faster, in the wet or on a twisty back road it wouldn't be close.
one thing that is scarey about modern cars is weight, a peugeot 207 wieghs more than the original quatro !, look at the weight of the elise mk1 and the latest models
also people seem to confuse capabilities and enjoyments, to switch to an aero example, the eurofighter typhoon is a far more capable fighter than a spitfire and if you had to go into battle youd be mad to pick the spit. for a peacetime pleasure flight, you'd be hard pushed to fing a typhoon pilot that wouldn't prefer the spit due to the sensations and the sense of "occasion". in almost every supercar comparison involving the 911 since the late '70s, its been stated how much more feel there is from it than from the modern equivilents. no one in their right mind (apart from tris maybe ) would suggest that an mx5 is a better car at going fast from a to b given a clear road than an evo or scoobie. on the other hand when your driving at 50 mph behind other traffic, when road conditions, design, traffic levels and quite often the law prevent you from overtaking the mx5 may well provide the more enjoyable experience. similarly in the wet, a "jap" 4wd will be miles faster but people like tris can enjoy themselves, hanging the tail out on roundabouts etc plus saddly the evo and other bewinged cars unfortunatly attract the attention of the police, living in anglesey i often pass a lot of cars which are going or have been to anglesey circuit for a track day. they will, mostly due to the over the top reporting against brunstrum giving the impression of unlimited anti enjoyment police, being doing aprox 68 mph incase they get pulled yet i can run at a steady **mph in a renault diesel.
one reason why drifting seems to have evolved is this total competence of modern cars, people like the feeling of sliding and will deliberatly alter the handling of their cars so they can get the tail out and hold it there, speed isn't the objective any more for a large number of owners, its putting the fun back into their driving experience. similarly track days have become a huge business as it becomes impossible to explore a cars potential on public roads, if that potential is lower, it becomes easier to expore it and as such you can achieve that level of "fun" more often.
As I said, it depends on the road. Lots of straights and wide roads favour cars with more power. But given a decent B-road, or even a narrow A-road the MX-5 is more than capable of beating technically faster cars. In my day (I've slowed down on the road since I've been able to race!) I have beaten a Boxster, an Evo IV an S2000 (an early one admittedly, before they could do corners), an SL55 AMG and something else that escapes me now.
Put an MX-5 on a track, even a slow twisty one like, err, Cadwell or a Rockingham infield configuration, and the MX-5 will be beaten easily. But all race tracks reward power much more than very sprited road driving, and you don't need 300hp to go as fast as a 4WD Computer Controlled Missile for Fools (Evo).
^^ But a fast road drive has nothing to do with the actual speed your covering the road at, the best drivers car will give the most fun at the lowest speed. Most of the other cars you've mentioned can't be driven anywhere near their limits on a public road. If you were to time them over a closed section of country lane the 4WD cars would be by far the fastest, they may be boring and uninvolving to drive and spend half the time understeering but their blisteringly fast acceleration and traction would more than make up for it. Of course compared to proper sports cars with similar power outputs it would be a different story.
Back in the 90's i really wanted a little open topped sportscar so i test drove an MX5, a Triumph Spitfire and an MGB. And to be honest, i loved'em. All great fun (even on or below the speed limits), and just as quick in the real world as almost any high powered car you can think of. And driving with the roof down is just so much more thrilling than a tintop, kinda puts you back in touch with what motoring should be.
Unfortunately, at the time i lived in a really rough part of town, so most insurance companies just laughed at me and bumped up the quotes to ridiculous levels.
And perhaps more importantly i came to the conclusion that they were all just a bit too gay for my liking. So, i got married and bought a Volvo instead.
But now i wish i had bought a convertible, and if finances allow i would do it today. Only this time i think i'd get a TR6, or a Stag, or something, yunno, something that only REAL men can drive
some very silly post's coming out here (as expected) tristan/ajp drive the cars your slagging off and you will change your mind, dont get me wrong i know impreza's understeer more than an ocean liner but setup properly they are awesome and i would'nt call any evo uninvolving to drive or dull
Buy the new XFG , every new car sold comes with Rick Astley's latest hit album free!!!! And the first 100 cars sold will receive a free set of day glow seat covers with "Choose Life" stitched onto them.
I have. I hated the Impreza - absolute tosh. The Evo was quite a good laugh, but I didn't like the styling (personal I know), and I didn't like the fact that the only reason it was a laugh was because a computer programmer had made me look good at car control. It was completely UNinvolving because of it.
there is no computer controlled gizmo's driving the car for you and personally i dont believe that you have driven an evo, and even if you have i'll bet my left arm it was'nt round a track
anyway i dont care what you think of it, if a nonce in a hairdressers car doesnt like evo's because of how they are "styled" thats only another reason for me to like them :P
Curious, how can you think that the evo has no computer controls helping keep control of the car... Lets see there is YAW control, ABS, Traction control, should I keep going? Active differential management... Where is the fun in that? Yay I just set a new laptime, oh wait I don't actually know how to drive and I rely on computer systems to 'blurr' the edge so I when I see a light on the dash I know I am going too fast.
The Evo IS a computer driven car. Watch this video and you will see what i mean. The evo shifts the power around to the wheels with the biggest amount of grip, Wheres that in a RWD car? The driver is doing that. In the Evo its a whole different story.
