TrackIR First Impression Review

Well Tuesday it came in the mail when I got home from work, my first thought was the box is tiny for what I had been thinking. Once opened I saw how small the actual tracker is, just an inch or two in size, which made me quite happy considering I have to deal with it on top of my monitor. Setting up TrackIR was very simple, plug the tracker into the USB port and tape it to my monitor. I had to use my own tape since it wasn't suppled, and because I do not have a thin LCD screen which the unit is setup to clip onto. Getting the TrackClip Pro on my head was another story, first I don't wear caps so I don't have one anywhere, and the headphones I planned on using go around the back of my head and won't allow the LEDs to point at the tracker.

I quickly tried a winter hat knowing in my head that it would only be a10 minute fix since the clip would vibrate ever so slightly and getting it back in the same spot after removing the hat would be incredibly difficult. About 5 minutes of fiddling with the dials I decided to only use the Yaw axis control and I hopped into Live For Speed. Amazing! Thats all there is to it. I drove a few laps in a few cars for about 10 minutes and had to find a better solution, which I endedup using an old roller-blading helmet with just the foam. I went back and set things up a little more properly and used all 6 axis, although was still quite anxious to get into the game and play. So I jumped into the FBM and you can look up at the sky! It really was the first thing I tried while waiting for green lights.

I have only played with it for about 2 hours and still need to tweak the sensitivity a little bit. This will take a lot of time to get perfect but within the two hours it was working very naturally and honestly I didn't feel some of the effects I thought I would. I had read and heard that one of the downfalls to the head tracker is that you move your head to the left but you need to move your eyes to the left. Before buying TrackIR I tried this a bit and while looking at the center of the screen and turning my head I noticed the feeling a bit. However when in game I didn't notice that same feeling, in fact I don't even know if I turned my eyes while playing in the game.

At $200 it isn't the cheapest thing to buy for your Sim-Racing setup, but it has been worth every penny. Just getting in game and looking around was amazing. Its quite obvious that it would be but this actually blew away my expectations and I am very happy with it. Immersion level has increased so much. I had been planning on buying a bigger monitor first, as I play on 17" crt right now and want a bigger screen, although I am very happy that I bought TrackIR first. It is probably the third most immersive item in my setup, falling just behind the Logitech G25 and my computer. I may try writing how I feel a month from now since this is all based on the "opening night".
Great initial review. I have also just purchased the TrackIR and am slowly getting to grips with it. The increase in immersion is far greater than I was anticipating, and after a few hours it started to become natural, looking around the car and into corners. As said in the SRT review, with the TrackIR the helmet cam in Race07 finally makes a lot of sense!

I gave LFS ago without the headtracker after using it for a bit and it felt like my head was in a vice! However, I need to tweak the settings a bit before it is perfect. When I get a profile I like I'll link to it here for you to give it a go.

I had been thinking about saving for a triplehead2go setup for a while now, but tbh I think that by upgrading to a slightly bigger monitor and using the trackir I can get a similar effect, thus saving money and desk space.

Do I think the trackir makes me lap faster? In a word, no. It certainly helps in spotting apexes and comes in especially useful for situational awareness in tight racing, but I don't think it will cut your laptimes. In fact, it took a while before I felt 'connected' to the car again, as until you have 'trained your head' it can be hard to see the visual cues as to what the car is doing. I have not raced online with it yet, but I can see my racecraft improving as I get to grips with it more. The main advantage is that of the immersion and illusion of reality that headtracking provides, which after all is the reason we simrace at all, isn't it?

Let me know how you're getting on...
I can agree it probably didn't make me "faster", not that I was fast to begin with. It didn't slow me down too much but the ONLY issue I've had in the minor bits of testing is to get the feel for snap over steer. The thing works great in a progressive oversteer situation and I feel more connected to the car, but in the Single Seaters where you can get that "snap" you can't easily judge between head movement and car movement which is the only disconnection from the car that I have felt. This has improved and will get better as I get used to it but thats a valid point to consider. I will be able to get used to it but I noticed my times drop about 1s or so on WE1 during the first night of testing with the FBM... Its mainly because you get a little "afraid" of the throttle...
Interesting. Thanks for the review. You should post it over at thewayiplay.com - they have a nice site over there for hardware reviews.

I'd be interested in hearing from a TrackIR user that already has a 3 monitor setup.

I have a Trackir 4, it cost me €160.
I'v used some time but not for long.

And it used to work 360° in LFS but LFS is now limited to looking around in 180° :s

It works great in racing games but for me its more something for flight sims.
I've been threatening to get TrackIR for some time now - well I finally ordered it and it should arive any day now - I'll post some comments soon, I'm looking forward to this
Have to say that after using this for a couple of weeks now, what a brill piece of kit.

Its really good but not a must have for track racing, but for Richard Burns Rally and Flight sims it is just bloody fantastic.

Up until now I have used the look into corners feature in most games and that also is a good feature but with track IR you free up two extra buttons on your wheel for other purposes, and there aint many buttons on a G25 wheel.

Track IR also gives a better 3D perspective which I found to increase emersion - as others say I don't think you would improve your LT's but it does a great deal for emersion.

Take a little time to get used to it and develop your own profiles - it even made me a little nauseous at times, but Im really glad that I persevered.
I cannot imagine being without it now, it has become so intuitive to use that I would feel a little handicapped without it now.
Quote from Polyracer :it has become so intuitive to use that I would feel a little handicapped without it now.

I actually feel very handicapped and unsafe, I enjoy using it mostly to look over the sides to double check when battling with someone. Very hard to do that with the buttons as they were on my G25 shifter... Glad you took the time to get used to, funnily enough it didn't take but an hour or two for me, although I would have spent acouple weeks if I had needed to.
