You didn't see my edit :P

Makes me wonder if I should throw in the Towel with my bike and just buy one now :X Grrrrr.

Want a car, but can't afford one.

GRRRR!
Tbh, people like bikes etc etc, but thats fast bikes. Peds are build to be thrashed then probley scraped lol. Even if you dont have the money, Keep saving. Getting a car is much more worth it IMO
im back!!!! but only for one day because my internet is getting cancelled again.

I got a bike one day before my birthday. the yamaha tzr50. its a good lookin bike for a 50cc and its fast enough. the fastest i've done was 40mph in 4th gear(it has 6) because i ran out of road and i cant use it on the streets yet because i dont have a license. i passed the test(got 40/40) but im waiting for them to send me my license, it should be here in about a week and then i'll need insurance which costs 200 deposit then 80euro a month for 10 months and i'll probably have the 200 in a week or 2.
My RS50, when I was 16, would happily sit at 61mph all day long*.

I'd recommend a bike or a moped to anyone. Unless you spend a lot of time on dual-carriageways (where the speed difference is too much imo), you'll learn tonnes more about grip and how it's altered by various factors, which can only stand you in good stead for cars. Plus they are quicker around town, and easier/cheaper to park. Not so good for a big weekly shop though.

*unless there was a hill to go up or a headwind. Or if I had a pillion. And it wouldn't do more than 63mph ever either.
i wanted to get an rs50 but they were too expensive for me. my bike is 2004 and i got it for 650euro
But you're happy to spend a thousand Euros insuring it??!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?

And I bet you'll just wear t-shirts and stuff, not proper bike wear, right?
no im going to buy insurance, drive it and collect money for proper gear.
So what happens when you get hit by a car in the first week, and get dragged down the road? Accidents don't wait for you to buy abrasion resistant clothes. If you ride without them then I almost HOPE you need them, so that future mopedists can learn from your stupidity.
My friend has two proper bike coats with back protecters and elbow protectors and he said he'll let me borrow one so only my knees will be wrecked
Get a decent helmet, jacket with ce approved armor and gloves. Wont cost the earth.
And hands. And feet. And thighs. And Ankles. Nothing important then.

How much did your lid cost, and what is it?
i have a helmet nd shoes so all i need is trousers

If I had the cash then i'd consider having all the gear but for my bike I can't see knee/leg/feet protectors being worth the cost, or the hassle of putting them on - i mainly use my bike for getting to School, and putting on over-trousers and special shoes is not only impractical, but i'd have nowhere to store them (Locker is big enough for my helmet (containing my gloves / balaclava) and my jacket (barely)).

Of course getting gloves, a helmet (duh!), a balaclava (couldn't ride without one) and a proper armoured jacket ARE important.
RST clothing is good quality and should cost more than it does id recomend them for gloves, AGV do a very good range of lids all different price ranges. If you feel you need boots/trousers id look at frank thomas gear.

Best bet is to go to a local motorcycle shop and see what they have, be on the look out for stuff thats on offer ethier because its last years models or one of the last in the shop. But be sure to buy a helmet that is the right size and clothing that is not baggy. Ask somone in the shop to help if your not sure what size to get.
I wore over-trousers, jacket, boots and gloves to school. Of course, being sixth form I was able to wear the jacket and the boots all day (as normal clothing), and handed the helmet with gloves inside into the school office for the day. Trousers went in the locker. Job done.

I don't see how having crushed/damaged legs isn't a bad thing? If you fall of or get hit your legs are much more likely to get damaged than your torso, but you choose a jacket first? Some people are weird...

You wear a balaclava too!

The bottom line is the whether you are going to Scotland from Cornwall, out with your mates in the next town, or nipping to school up the road, the accidents won't wait for you to save up. If you can afford a bike and insurance then you can afford same protection - it ain't going to be great, but some is better than nothing.
That's fun you guys are on high horses about safety clothes. I drove my moped for two years with only my MX helmet and gloves, never had an accident and never suffered from not wearing heavy and warm clothes during summer... Relax it's just a scooter it's not worth spending a penny for a scooter. Wait for when you get a proper street bike or something before spending on clothes.

Yep i agree with you, When i ride my bike i wear what i feel is appropriate. Id normaly wear jeans with a jacket. I have had big offs in jeans with big grazes as a result.

Leathers wont stop your legs getting crushed. And id say a jacket is more important first because if you fall you will put your arms out to break the fall, good elbow and shoulder pads will save you breaking your arms. Also dont forget the weather protection.

ED : But tristan is right in a perfect world if you have the money get the gear. Good clothing saved my life a few years back when i had a big crash. Still cant remember what happened, i just woke up in hospital.

Ok so what if you did have a accident or rode in bad weather?

I would have wore rubber boots and glasses.

Because I'd imagine my arms and torso are more likely to get smashed up than my legs (wrapped around the bike).

Hadn't thought about wearing massive boots and overtrousers around all day though, not really my sort of thing tbh :X

EDIT - I don't wear leg protection but I do wear Jeans as they have the highest resistance to gravel / road rash out of the trousers you'd normally wear.
Just to add today my brother and his mate bought full leathers/boots and gloves today for thier bikes ready for summer. (bikes they havent even bought yet :really Atleast they wont be riding round in t-shirts and shorts
Quote from Jakg :Enlighten Me. Go on.

My bike's been fettled a bit (ie new Exhaust and an upgraded Piston+Bore) and it'll do about 50 flat out. Stuff like Aprilia RS50's (before i got mine I saw a 1999 one sell for £1,500!) may go faster (ie 60) but who the funk spends that kinda cash (Thats almost triple what i spent on my bike, and £1,000 short of mine NEW) on a 9 year old bike?!)

I remember some ad for some Peugeot Speedfight special edition being the fastest-accelerating scooter in the world, but after i did my CBT on a Speedfight that wouldn't go faster than 35 MPH (which is odd as it SHOULD be restricted, but wasn't!) was a heap of shit I wouldn't recommmend it (imo all the "scooter style" bikes are naff to ride anyway). A review of a 2001 Typhoon puts the top speed at a mind blowing 46 MPH.

EDIT - Oh cock. Just seen a mint RS50 from 1999 in Colchester (aka as near here as my bike was) sell for £550. Balls.

Speedfights aren't a heap, my mate 04 speedfight 2 goes just under 70mph, but it has had a bit of money spent on tuning parts for it, for example, bigger piston kit, malossi big bore etc. Haven't riden a scooter what has had as strong powerband as what that has. Scooters don't intrest me though, if I was you I would go for a RS50, may be more expensive then the others but they are worth it, just ride before you buy because they have most likely been ragged around, better off getting a 1 year old used RS50. If you dont wont to get a car when you are 17 I would get a DT125 because they are good bikes and you can make them go quick.
