Shared IP address/changing it?
I'm having a problem downloading a file (from Badongo) the website tells me my IP address has already exceeded its limits for the hour, I've tried this several times over the last few days and always get the same message.

From what I understand my ISP (BT) is giving me a shared IP address which is obviously being used by others downloading from this site all the time. A quick google seemed to bring up various different answers and I'm a bit confused. I'm sure this should be a really easy question but what is the easiest way to change my IP address?

Unplug the router > wait a few minutes > plug it in again.

Use something such as WhatsMyIp.com to check to see if it has worked.

Odd the IP address that is given by that site is completely different to the IP address given by the site I'm trying to download from?

Google "Whats My IP" and 20 million sites will appear, and for me they give the same "right" address.

All the look up my IP sites give one IP address and the site I'm trying to use gives me a completely different one so I'm not sure what's going on.
The file is 6kb (according to that link), can't you get someone to download it and then send it to you?

Or even if it is somewhat bigger than 6kb, someone should still be able to download it and send it your way.

FWIW i'm on BT and I get the following error:

"YOU ARE CURRENTLY CONNECTED TO OUR SYSTEM WITH THE FOLLOWING IP ADDRESS: 194.72.9.25
THIS ADDRESS HAS DOWNLOADED A TOTAL OF 1479MB IN THE LAST HOUR ALREADY."

Only my IP is 86.144.97.xxx...

Yes that's exactly the same message I'm getting on the same ISP

The look up sites give 86.140.15.xx

Thanks

I seem to have managed to get it to work by signing up for a free account, guess it doesn't do it by if your registered.

That entirely depends on your network setup as to whether that's going to work or not. This network, for example, is set up with a static IP (so I only have to remember one ), and no matter how often I unplug and replug... it'll remain the same.

Network?

I have a Static IP on my network, but like 99% of the people using BT for Resedential Purposes we (as in our router) is assigned a Dynamic IP - iirc this is to discourage people hosting servers, and also just the way things work. BT do offer Static IP's, but only for Business Broadband and at extra cost iirc.

Dynamic IPs are also suggested to leave you less exposed to a prolonged attack/identity theft, how much of a difference they really make I don't know.

Back when I used to race in leagues for N2003 and GPL some people had arranged static IPs with their ISPs at no cost, but given my experiences with BT I doubt they'd know what an IP address was let alone offer me a static one.

Good 'ol BT Support - They were Caching my website so when i'd try to look for an updated picture on there I couldn't find it - I emailed them about it.

Their response?

"Perhaps you should try our Geocities hosting?"

Well, I've set up the network here so that the network-facing IP is static, too. It used to be perfectly allowable, and the norm with ISPs - guess that trend has by-and-large changed, but I've come through unscathed

Are you with a "proper" ISP like Entanet though?

BT, Tiscali, AOHell etc all learned it's much easier to screw over customers with packet shaping, download limits, bundled shitty software and dynamic IP's
Yeah, I am. Well, at least with a half-proper ISP, on one of their 'proper' packages - good job it's not extortion, really, or I'd be majorly annoyed

I absolutely refuse to use 'popular' ISPs - I'd rather not get screwed over.
