The H9 is a nice camera, but in that price range I'd just jump up a few $$$ and go for an entry-level dSLR like the Pentax K100D Super or the Nikon D40x.
But to get the equivalent zoom function, it would be quite a bit more.

The D40 is at Amazon for ~$100 over that Sony, but you would need another lens to match.

The picture quality and the range of functions would be far greater with even the lowest priced dSLR available, 6 mp Nikon D40, than any non-dSLR. But you do pay for it.

I would go for the D40 over the D40x. Less noise and I believe better image quality (6 mp vs. 8-10 mp on the same size sensor). You shouldn't need any more than 6 mp. Megapixels is just hyped up for marketing reasons to get people to buy more.

Nikon's D40, D40x, and D60 all have limitations in which lenses will autofocus with them. I still have my eye on the D40 though. Won't get one though due to cash on hand. Throughout all the photography sites/forums, the D40 photos always seem to be the sharpest to me over all the budget/beginner dSLRs.
Agreed, the D40 is the DSRL to buy if your short on cash. It might not have many features or gimmicks compared to the competition but it's definitely the most camera in its price range.
I'd say the comparable Pentax matches it for quality and beats it for lens compatibility, but I understand that it's not as recognizable of a name. :P
Maybe i should go for the D40,i can have it for about 400€. I'll see what it will become
Take a dSLR over any other non-SLR. You'll regret it otherwise. D40 is a great camera. If it's in your budget, go for it.

Flickr is a good place to look around for different brands & popular cameras. Not ideal for comparing cameras to each other though.

You can also find useful info here.

I know it's not exactly a camera but if you also need a new phone get a Sony Ericsson K850i it has a cybershot 5 megapixel camera, I have to say it's not a bad camera at all, if you use the setting right you barely ever get a pixelated picture. Just a though I know it wont be as good as just a camera but if you also need a new phone it could work.
