Mario Kart Wii
Well since Forza 2 and GT5 both got their own topics, I decided Mario Kart deserved one too

My copy just arrived today so I'm looking forward to seeing what this generation has given the franchise. And with the rate that the game is selling, there's bound to be some of you guys who will be interested in a discussion topic as well.

Played it at a friends place two days ago. With those "steering wheels" you put your controller into... its like holding a steering wheel in your hands, not attached to anything. Feels quite weird, but also quite fun. The game itself pretty much felt like Mario Kart on the Nintendo 64. I didn't have more fun than on the N64, but that was always good fun of course.

I wouldn't go and buy it since i still have the Nintendo 64 and Mario Kart. Does the job just as good.
I'm not sure I'll bother using the wheel. I got a Gamecube pad as part of the bundle and I'll probably end up using that. But I'll give it a shot just to see how it works.

But the online play is the real reason I picked it up
Bought this last friday. Really good game so far, and 4 players usuing the wheel is such a laugh. its good the further you go the more stuff you unlock as well.

Only downside is is that you cant have player-controlled-only championship. Other than that its a very good game, well worth the money
wow great.. i love nintendo, first smash bros and then mario kart wooohoooo!
Alright, I played it all last night and a quick 40 minutes before work this morning. I'm loving it Can't use the wheel worth a damn though - it doesn't seem to steer left enough. I'm not sure if why, unless it's related to the angle I sit at related to the sensor bar.

But with the Wiimote/Nunchuck combo I'm back on form. Did 3 online races last night to introduce myself to online Wii games and came 5/7 then 3/7 and 3/6 - and all on tracks I'd never played before. Nobody was cheating or griefing either, which was good. The ratings system should hopefully sort that out.

I'm mainly working through the GPs though so I can unlock as much as possible before my brother wants to play at the weekend
Whats it like online? Lag free? Many people playing?
Well I played using the Continental matchmaking options and it found 7 other people really quickly so there must be a lot of people playing (this was after 11pm GMT). The people I raced against were from the UK, France, Holland and I think Sweden (it pops each Mii up on the global map as they connect, which is really cool).

If there was lag I didn't see it at all. All of the karts were moving all the time, there was no noticable latency between something happening and the effects. So if I saw a shell hit, the car stopped moving right then. Without voice comms to judge it's hard to tell for sure, but it looks like the online system is top notch.
I'd have it as the benchmark for all future online Wii games.
Great fun, my housemate got it on Saturday and we've been playing it for hours every day since hehe. There are advantages/disadvantages to each controller type, but they all even out nicely (I still prefer to use a Cube controller). Can't get enough of 4 player multiplayer
Ok, may have to set up online later on then, if its that good!
It was definitely good when I tried it.

I'm going to edit the OP with friend codes if anyone wants to post them here.

And it rocks. Allthough the 150cc cups are a tad too random for my liking: leading three laps, but getting blown away by the damned blue shell on the last corner and ending up being 8th because of that sucks :/
i just came from having a pretty decent go and this game is lots of fun, but a bit frustrating when you continuously get shot. Ive been playing people all over the world and lag isnt a problem. Its not smooth like playing people on the same console, but it doesnt affect the gameplay.

The unique tactics of Mario Kart.
Well, not tackled it online, as I want to beat all the cups first, but somehow I think that a lot of Mario Karts multiplayer charm is lost, because you can't directly laugh at your humiliated opponents
There is something amusing about being able to see the look on your friend's face when you smack them right before the finish line, or burst their last balloon.

But the online play is way better than the cups, because you don't get gang-banged the same when it's real people. On the 150cc cup the odds of good items are stacked in favour of the CPU so you get hit with item after item.
But online it's not like that, because everyone has the same chances. And people don't hold onto power-ups because they know that if they get hit they lose it.

I love it
The main thing that determines which pickup you get is your position in the race though.

Have to say the online system is nicely thought out and works well
