Just Bought An Xbox - Need Advice
Well, I just bought a used original Xbox (£20! Wahey!), it's got one controller, and thats it - i dont have games or anything.

What should I buy? What should I do with it?

I was gonna turn it into a PVR, but i also "like" the idea of console gaming on the cheap, what games should i get?

Sell it for 80£, save up and get A Xbox 360!

One thing you could do is get someone to put an EvoX chip in it with a higher capacity hard drive in. I have it done to mine and I can store pictures, movies, games, radio stations and the obvious music. I have about 80 games stored on my xbox what I just went to blockbusters every time a new game came out what I liked the look of burn into onto my to the xbox's hard drive and took the game back and I still had the game. You could do that, don't know how much the chip is now but when I had it done it cost £105 that includes the chip, hard drive and fitting.
Erm well

a) You won't sell it for £80, but you knew that.
b) Chips are still expensive, £30-40 - I did my executor3 years ago and still have my xbox being used as a media center. The best thing you can do really, or
c) Softmod it, but I don't know how easy or reliable that is, you'd need to get hold of a few things first that would probs cost around £20 posted anyway.

You could also, strip the case out and fit a proper pc in there as I once did, but then got very bored of that project and left it.
I bought an Xbox a year or so ago for £20 and the only games I had for it were Forza and some Rally game, I think it was Rallisport Challenge I think. Forza was a great game and after being a bit of a Gran Turismo whore I liked Forza a lot more.
Rallisport was also great fun, especially 4 player after a few tinnies.

I didn't have it very long as I sold it on for £30 but it was fun while I had it. Wasn't modded/chipped etc, but still good.
You can pick up an Xecuter 2.6 CE for £19.49 - http://www.modchip-store.co.uk/Xecuter-26-Ce-p-55.html

I'd grab one of those and bang the chip in there, probably the best thing you can do. My xbox is currently running Gentoox and I use it to play PGR2 every now and then, other then that I barely use it. I've done about 6 or 7 xbox chip installs and I've used both the Xecuter 2.3 + 2.6 and both have worked perfectly.

If you don't want to sign up to xbox live there are alternatives available to gaming online (XLINK and XBConnect) to name a few.
Dig around the used games bin at Game or Blockbuster..Emmy recently grabbed 5 games including Lego Star Wars (6 episodes!!! Brill!!),Driv3r (crap!), Unreal Championship and Splinter Cell for £10!!!!

The full 6 ep version of Lego Star Wars is awesome , my housemate has it for the Wii and it was a great laugh playing through it. Can't wait for Lego Indiana Jones
(myth)buntu for pvr use, mod chip + warez games
I'd go with, and have got, XBMC which is truely excellent for a media center. Does everything I'd want it to and is proper easy to use.

XMBC was what I was gonna use, i've just never had a console before and wanted to see what I should try.
Splinter Cell 3 is a good game, especially online.

can you do that with 360!???? burn the game
XLINK sucks big time, everyone plays HALO 2 and thats all!, i bought a crossover cable just to play there, i was pretty exited, then when i started forza and opened the xlink thingie, no one was there
Yer back in the day we used to use XBConnect to play Halo/Halo2 online but it could be a pain to use sometimes. When it did work though it was a bit of a laugh
Forza and PGR are great games for the original xbox.

Just got PGR for £2.04 delivered, now gonna get me a copy of Forza, maybe the lego game too.

Are there any controllers or leads I should get?

I love old tech - got a 32" CRT TV (£600 new), a multi-region Sony DVD Player (£150 new) and an Xbox (£300 new) for less than £100.
There's a reason it's cheap...:P Not saying that's a bad thing necessarily, got the 28" wide flatscreen CRT in our student house for £30.
Get an Xecuter chip in there and throw a 200GB HD in the thing, I use mine for playing back films (entire DVD collection compressed on computer and put on there), and have all my games copied to the HD as well, saves searching around for discs. I put this setup together inc the console for around £120 a year or two back.

XBMC is a great interface for it, has every function you need, every dashboard will have a built in FTP server so its incredibly simple to setup. Pick up a DVD-remote kit as well, they're only a couple of quid and are much better than a wired gamepad for playing back films. Another reason I like XBMC, I have my Xbox wired up via component cables, and XBMC runs in HD resolutions no problem.

They're brilliant media centres, I have one in my family room as well which is used purely for films. Easy for family to use with the MS Media Centre skin.

Games, the PGR & Burnout series are lots of fun, Halo 1/2 of course & Forza. Crimson Skies is a lot of fun as well.

If yours came with the original style controllers, do yourself a favor and pick up a later-design controller, much nicer to use, quite similar to the 360 controller actually.

Ok, i'll buy the "S" controller as well.

Bidding on a remote, too.

Forgot about Burnout, and loved Crimson Skies on the PC!

OT - I've got component (the three circular cables) on my Xbox, and on my TV, but i've also got a Component -> Scart adaptor, which i could also use - which should I use?
Those aren't component - components have a cable for each colour channel, and uses 2 RCA's to carry audio (IIRC, of course). But for the cables you have, your best to bin them and pick up an "RGB" scart cable, which gives a better picture on a normal telly like yours, and gives much better colour definition. Got mine from Gamestation for a tenner ages ago, so prob only a couple of quid now.

Now I remember, the Red Faction games were released on Xbox, they're well worth picking up, good fun in multiplayer after a few to drink too.

Don't know but I'm not modding my 360 because you lose live so its best to leave it as it is.
