Maybe it was enjoyable BECAUSE you were massively unprepared? Unless you are planning on camping somewhere seriously dangerous like Everest, my advice is to take a huge amount of unpredictability with you.

OK, so that might mean lots of drugs and alcohol... you got that covered, but the point of camping is to take as little as possible and seek out solutions to any dilemmas that brings. Get lost, feel hungry, crave comfort! Its the best way to discover things in places you'd never have found them otherwise.

Fuel for the fire, down jacket for a pillow (or for nights as they can still be chilly)

Is it car camping or heading into the wilds?

I have lists for both in the house as my memory is total keech and I end up heading north camping most weekends

Last time we went we were ~1 minute from the car, don't know if it'll be the same as now but when we went last time we didn't go back to the car - we took everything with us.

@nihil: I think in the past when I've gone camping it's been for a different reason than this. Things haven't been great for me lately so I'm looking forward to having an enjoyable (and hopefully relatively comfortable) time away - I plan on doing a lot more sitting about talking than the last time we went playing action man.

On topic: I don't know much about camping, I'm not up for it either. But maybe some plastic bags to keep stuff in.. Matches and a lighter.. I dunno :-D
