In need of a new PC, about £400-450
Well my laptop seems to have died (it spontaneously set alight while playing LFS-but thats all another story) so il be taking it apart and proberly Ebaying its RAM(jsut got it as well grr) n screen ect and what ever else i can flog. Theres only one part thats broken but its (im told) impossible to fix with out it. and as its 4 year old now( even so i got between 20 and a capped 50fps out of it on full grids) it will be hard to find a spare.

I want a new PC neway, A tower not fussed about looks really dont need speakers, mouse, could do with a new screen but iv got a big crt one laying about.

Saw this system on overclockers and it seems ok to me-had a look at reviews of the various components(im not all that up on computers but i like AMD and ATi so keep the intel's away from me =])

Anyway-the spec:

£410

AMD Athlon X2 4200+ 2.20GHz (Socket AM2)

- MSI K9N Neo V3 (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

- OCZ 2GB (2x1024MB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit

- HP DVD1040i-B 20x DVD±RW IDE Dual Layer Lightscribe ReWriter (Black)

- ATI Radeon 3870 XT 512MB GDDR4 HDTV/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express)

- Western Digital 250GB SATA-II 16MB Cache

Not fussed about size of HDD 100GB would be fine.

Power supply might need increasing?

any similar builds for around 400-450, but i dont want to build it all up my self.

Any input apprecieated, thanks

Regards, Jay

Intel's Core Range is MUCH better than anything AMD can offer atm.

Can you build the PC yourself or not?
Id go with no TBH. Just so i can complain at someone else when it goes wrong.

Hmm ok. Il look at Intels
Just made another quick system on cyber power systems.

What do you think ?

Thats better, but I really think £531 should buy you more
Well i know your knowledgeble on your computers and what not. What do you think i should be able to get for around £450?

I know someone that builds PCs and im seeing him today, thats why im getting specs together that i might like and seem to be in the price range. He will more than likley make them a bit cheaper.

I'm too busy to price up a complete build atm (although someone else probably will), but the best bet would be this with the 8800GT upgrade.

I would of thought you could get a Q6600, P31 mobo, 4 GB of RAM, an 8800GT, Vista, a DVD-RW drive and a decent PSU / Case for just over £450.
Thanks that dell PC seems quite ok.

Is 4GB overkill unless you have vista?

I dont want to be a public beta tester of the bugged vista tbh (from what i'v heard) not at the moment anyway

Il go try makle some systems with the items you described above

4 GB is overkill for LFS and t'internet, but for stuff like Photoshop, ultra new games etc it really helps, especially as memory is so cheap now.

Theres a lot of misinformation about Vista out at the moment - I like Vista a lot, but it doesn't do anything extra I couldn't live without.
I made a dell system:

E4600 duo (2.4ghz)
8800 GT 512mb
3GB RAM ( I can always get more RAM later if i need it when i have a pay packet comming in)
XP Pro(same price as vista so i duno if i would get xp or vista)
1TB HDD(Smallest one they did)
keyboard,mouse,1yr warranty

£486.

offers expire soon though...

I'd be suspicious of the PSU, but apart from that it looks ok.
Drop to a Radeon 3850, overclock it and get a better PSU, no point getting that system and having the PSU wipe everything out after a few month's :/

Edit: I heard the 3850 is the equivalent of a 3870 Pro when overclocked by a good margin.
#14 - Jakg
The 3850 is nothing like a 3870 when overclocked.
4870's and 4850's are coming out in june, right? if you keep waitin, you'll be waiting forever. but... the 4870 is supposed to be really really fast. and it might cause a price drop on the 3870 when released.
If I may have a say...

If you want something that will last you a longer time and play better games... Go with Intels E8400's they're great... Just as good at OC'ing.....

With WC on a col morning a buddy of mine took the stock 3.0 and blew it outta the water with 4. someething GHz...

P5K is good from what I hear....

But... TBH... That system is out dated and could be alot better for 500e...
is the 8800 GT better than the 3870?

is it worth the extra money?

Cheers
#18 - Jakg
Yes it's better.
got my Pc =]
The Specs

AMD 64 X2 4800+ Dual core
nVidia 8800 GS 384MB DDR3 (HD ready, SLi ready)
Asus Mobo Sli Compatible.
2GB DDR3 RAM- cant remember what the speed is..
600W EZ-cool power supply(with funky neon blue light lol)
160GB HD + my 120GB external Drive.

Yes, its only a GS but it does Xactly what i want and the whole thing was £400 built with OS and antivirus(New AVG)

I dont think its bad
#20 - Jakg
I dont think your RAM is DDR3...
Quote from Jakg :I dont think your RAM is DDR3...

maybe he has a top secret mobo
"They outperform AMD cpu's (or so the reviews say..)"

not what ones iv read-depends what yu read
#24 - Jakg
Quote from Gabkicks :maybe he has a top secret mobo

No idea if you know, but DDR3 RAM IS out.

Of course, the memory controller on the CPU, and the memory slots on the mobo are DDR (1) only, though :P
YES, i know its out. but are there any AMD mobos that support DDR3 out? Not until AM3 iirc. so that was the reason i made my joke.
