On the subject of non-English language films: My mother can't stand films with subtitles, but she was absolutely glued to La Haine. Definitely worth watching if you haven't seen it, gripping stuff.

Donnie Darko's a fun little movie that has unfortunately been taken far too seriously by both its director (though I think he just might be insane--c.f. Southland Tales) and by its legion of college freshman whoaaaa, man fans. And the director's cut is far worse than the studio cut, which should tell you something.

Agreed on the Criterion Collection... they know how to pick 'em. So pleased that Mishima is finally getting the Criterion treatment in July(?).

I thought City of God was awesome and I cant bring myself to watch the second one because I dont want to be dissapointed. Same reason I have never watched Battle Royale 2.

I also agree that the directors cut of Darko is not as good as the original version.

Well, I advise against tempting fate with Battle Royale 2. It's bad. Real bad.

City of Men is good, though. Personally, I liked the tv series better, but they're both worth watching.

Best movie i've seen in a long time (seriously).

Just watched Donnie Darko again and I have to say I enjoyed it more that time than the first, I kept up with it more and read all the important things from the book....

I figured since i watched the nines and that they could both be compared to each other that I should watch it again and in truth I don't think the nines is anywhere near this film and urge anyone who hasn't saw it to give it a watch...or two.

btw, anyone who really enjoyed the mindbending time travel aspect of Donnie Darko should ABSOLUTELY give a little movie called Primer a look. Best sci-fi film to come out in ages, and it was made for $7,000.

Indeed BR2 is terrible, the first one, I thought, was VERY good, I also liked the Korean film "Host".

is a fantastic Australian western, written by Nick Cave. Easily one of the best films I've seen in years.

Lastly, the low budget British movie "Dead Man's Shoes" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419677/ directed by the excellent Shane Meadows with a great performance by Paddy Considine.

I'd recommend seeing Ratatouille. Don't diss it just because it is an animation film. Personally I really liked it even if I was really sceptical about it.

And I still can't understand what people find in that 'new' "War of the Worlds". It's just plain stupid. I just friggin hate the scene where they're getting over the river and can't drive away just because they need to raise the RAMP. Comeone, we have a situation here, a few people in the water is NOTHING.

Getting back to finnish movies, Pahat Pojat was a pretty good flick and even had a meaning to it (altough it contains Nordic humour so some of you won't probably get it)

Watched 'The Blues Brothers' yesterday. A great stupid comedy that isn't fully stupid.

Slightyly off-topic, but an interesting query:
Yesterday I was doing a quiz on Flixter (Yeah, I know...sad!), and one of the questions was: "Which major critically acclaimed movie was the influence for 'The Fifth Element'?"

Out of the 4 possible answers the only one I could discount for certain was "Blade Runner"... yet according to the results, that was the correct answer!
Now, call me a pedantic old fart. but I have seen both movies quite a few times, to the extent that I could probably write the entire script of Blade Runner from memory, yet I completely fail to see any connection between the two films.
Anybody know of a connection that I may have missed?

BTW, to get on topic...I watched Blade Runner recently, for maybe the 39,987th time Highly recommended!

Just saw 'The King of Kong', a fascinating and hilarious doco about the contest between two rivals for the donkey kong WR. Classic underdog tale with incredible characters and some amazing natural twists and turns that would make any suspense writer from hollywood green with envy. As doco's go, this is truly up there with the best. Amazing movie!
