Football is a more techinally correct term for "soccer", simply because the majority of the game is played with your "foot on the ball", where as american football is played by big girlie blouse wearing pansies wearing more armour than a freakin tank .

I fecking hate the term "soccer"

So I am guessing your not coming to watch soccer in america any time soon?
Who invented it? What did they call it? There...

Soccer is sucker!
Err, american does have a kickoff but no-one sane can call this a ball

Or is it in the rules that some regular McDonald's customer has to sit on the ball first?
As English football came about before American football, surely football is the correct term for the game? The term soccer was, I believe, invented to cure the confusion that Americans got themselves into after inventing a new game with the same name but very different rules.

And, as far as I know, the foot part is not because it involved kicking a ball with a foot, but because it was played on foot. However, the is no definitive answer to this - it's been lost in the mists of time.

Personally football (as in English football) is a MUCH bigger game worldwide, and should therefore have priority (in terms of name) over the American 'version'. Perhaps American football should be called Soccer - somehow a contraction of Association Football - or Amfoot, or Ameriball instead, and solve the silly confusion once and for all.
=( The lone american. Also as for this thread I think its time to close?

I deffinitly would not go as far as to say that, we have our right to our true football.
Your 'true' football, that came AFTER a game called football was already invented ('English' football), yet decided for no apparent reason to invent a new name for the original (now called soccer), and then use football as the new name?

In what way is 'your' football the true one?

Trust me, as a player of "American Football" who is currently recovering from a serious injury it is not a sport for 'big girlie blouse wearing pansies'. I tend to call it Gridiorn though, avoiding confusion with the true football.

In the new world order that I will have within the next 5 (maybe 3 if China agress) the term soccer will be outlawed
Bob Schmitz can you close?
Your preaching to the choir, I was 2nd row for an amateur rugby team
