Computer mainly for LFS. $1000
Hi guys, I have $1000 to spend on a new PC, that includes everything except speekers. The main use for the computer is LFS. Also will be used for some internet browsing. What do you think I should get?

Thanks for your help,
Kenneth

$1000 is alot more than you need to do the job I'd say.

Thats about £600-£650 after VAT is added, a good computer that would last a while would be that much.

Link me to a site you would like to buy from and i'll spec up a PC for you.

Heyy, Do you think I really need a $50 mouse? Why not a $20 mouse instead?
Also, I have a build sheet here...It says CPU Heatsink? What is this and is it needed?
Thanks for your help!

Good thing you said that, I didn't realise the CPU i picked was OEM. Sure you can't use a different site? This one has pants all motherboards and monitors on. Its so biased towards SLI too its unreal.
Hmm, I can try and find another store... I dont really know of anymore though :P
You don´t need a super computer for LFS, something small and cheap like this should be enough:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 ~160$
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 ~120$
Memory: 2x1Gb Crucial Ballistix DDR2 PC8500 ~60$
Hard Disk: Western Digital Caviar 160Gb 16mb WD1601ABYS ~60$

Power Supply: Seasonic M12 II 500W ~100$
Case: Cooler Master RC690 ~90$
Graphics Card: nVidia 8800GT ~170$
Mouse: Logitech LX7 ~35$
Keyboard: Logitech UltraX ~20$
Screen: Acer X223Wbd 22" ~240$

Total: ~1055$

That´s just an idea, there are many configurations, you can´t go wrong with any 700-1000$ decent computer for LFS
I wouldn't go for 160gb drives as you can get 500gb for roughly the same price. Plus you can never have too much space, I recently bought 500gb disk and I'm already in desperate need of another

What about speakers and soundcard, high fps won't really make up for lack of sounds.

Edit: Silly me for not reading whole post.
You can't use newegg.com to order from?
They are great and cheap prices so i hear.
Thing is, do they ship to Canada? (im pretty sure they do though
Just wondering, why would anyone want a $35 mouse? You could pick up a cheap one for $10 and it would probably last longer than the $35 one.
You want to prioritize CPU performance over graphics performance for high framerates in LFS. A GF 7800 is plenty for 4x AA and 16x AF at 1920x1200. Get the highest clocked Core 2 Duo you can reasonably afford.
Well, I only have an 80Gb Raptor on a computer where I play all kind of games, browsing, watching movies and and it´s the computer my father uses for working. More than a half of its space is still free

As for the speakers... he already have ones, and related to the sound card... man, he is going to use the computer for LFS and sound is one of the more weak points in LFS. I didn´t notice absolutely nothing different when I upgraded to my X-Fi in LFS, so it´s useless for this game IMO.

Since last test patch LFS no longer uses as much CPU as always.

And finally , the $35 mouse... I am sure with a budget of 1000$ there is no problem on getting a mouse 25$ more expensive Despite of buying just a decent computer which doesn´t require too much performance, I like to buy high quality parts.

Well, those are just the reasons why I suggested that rig

Because i've probably used my mouse for probably several months solid and so having an uncomfortable POS is a false economy...
Alright guys, thanks for your help. I think I have an idea of what I am going to do...Guess what that is? Save up a bit more money It seems that if I save $200 more I can get a lot better than what I can get for $1000.

Thanks,
Kenneth
Or if you want your computer now you can check out Canada Computers or LU Computers instead, because they have far lower prices than Tiger. This is a known fact around here.
THanks for the red cobra. Gonna check it now
