ALMS Lime Rock 2008
Yesterday was my first time at a modern sports car race, and it was probably the most fun I've ever had. Lime Rock is like the ultimate spectator road course. One thing I was surprised with was how close you could get to everything. Just minutes before the race spectators were free to roam the grid and meet the drivers (My dad met Rodger Penske!). Since Lime Rock is so small it's easy to walk around and see all the track. Much to everyone's surprise, the track was already completed with the track changes planned for the end of this summer. I thought the new corners would destroy the old circuit, but the new corners were well planned and didn't interfere with the flow of the old course. Along with the new corners was a few new spectator area, and some of them seemed no more than 20 ft from the track.

Once in the track we got to see some amazing racing. In the morning the ALMS Lites series started, and even with noob drivers in slow cars, the race was fun to watch. Then Formula BMW Americas came out 12:30. They were a bit dissapointing because there were only 10 cars and the leader ran away with the race (just like an LFS race). Then after the grid was cleared at 1:45, the real fun began. With the Prototypes doing 48 second laps, it took a mere 5 minutes for the lapping to begin and then there was always something to watch. A Tequila Petron Acura (run by David Brabham and Scott Sharp) was on pole, but the Porsches were quick and too the lead by the end of turn 1. A few minutes later the silent Audis stormed up to the front and ripped past the Porsches, but with every high there is a low. The #2 Audi had multple spins and dropped a few good positions. Then the #1 Audi, while in first place, had contact with the #008 Aston Martin, putting it out untill the final minutes. For there on the Porsches seemed to dominate, but the Tequila Petron Acura unleased an ambush at the end, and for 7 of the last 9 minutes, the Acura was just 3 tenths behind the leading Porsche. Going into the first corner with 2 minutes left, the Porsche cracked under pressure and the Acure stormed away. Halfway through the last lap(luckly the last half off the lap is mostly downhill) the Acura ran out of fuel. It sputtered it's way on fumes to the finish line for a fantastic win. With such a good ending, it was one of the nicest races I've ever seen.

I will post pics, but there's a good 1,000 of them to sort through.
Here are some of the better pics:

Watched the replay on Speed couple hours ago and have to say that it was pretty amazing race. It was a first ALMS race I've watched and I quite enjoyed it, plenty of cars and even more action. I can understand the reason why Uphill and West Bend were changed, it worked pretty well to keep speeds down and have some extra runoff area.

About the Acura, he was just told on team radio to drop the pace on last lap to save fuel. I don't think he exactly run out of fuel but he didn't want to waste it in overtaking slower cars as he caught up with Ferrari and Viper (I think) on backstraight.

In overall, it was pretty amazing. Seeing them going 3-4 wide on mainstraight and then squeese into T1 makes you really respect their driving skill. If I tried some of that in iRacing, it would end up in spectacular crash :P

Looks like I've found a new wallpaper
It was indeed interesting seeing them run on the new layout (on Speed unfortunately, I live in Michigan now) having spent basically my entire childhood watching my dad race there as well as the whole Dyson crew. While I understand why they made the changes they did to the track, I will certainly miss seeing some of the faster cars come flying over that crest with the front wheels a foot off the ground. I was under the impression that the new layout would retain the old uphill and west bend for certain events, but it looked on TV as if West bend no longer exists? Can you verify that?

I was also under the impression that there would be a new pit entrance before the downhill, but I didn't see anything of the sort. Just a lot of dirt on the track...
The West Bend still exists, although it still maintains it's traditional shape the new kerbs look like they are bigger and longer than the previous ones. Plus without all the old bumps I wouldn't be surprised if it drives completely differently.

You're right, there was a crap load of dust, mainly in the west bend. In between the old corner and the new chicane in the best bend, it looked like the Sahara. If anyone dropped a wheel a huge plum of dust would come up, right into the face of the spectators on the outside of the track.
Dust problem should go away once that grass gets a chance to grow, although I think they first need to plant it all over again.
Rappa Z- You should plan on visiting NJ Motorsports Park this Fall. It's an awesome facility owned by the same group that rehabed VIR a few years ago. The weekend of September 26-28. $65 for all three days. http://www.njmotorsportspark.com/events.html
Just watched the race. What great battles across the field. Very very fun! Really happy with Brahbam snatching the win from Timo (guess I root for the underdogs). Nice pics, too!

I'm planning on being there September 27-28 on my bike.

And I'm planning to run my car there in late August. Planning= paid for before paving began on the course.

Be sure to book a hotel room early, since there isn't much available nearby. You might end up staying in Atlantic City if you're not on the ball.
I missed it this year?

I go almost every year as its not too far from my house (45 min drive). Nice pictures, maybe we will see each other next year.

EDIT: Here is my thread/pictures from last year's race.
