Recommend new music!
I see we have a 'recommend a movie' thread, why not music? Music plays a bigger part in most of our lives than movies I'd imagine. So, recommend a band you've discovered or seen lately. Anything (any genre) goes.

I'll start us off:

Elliott Smith

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Hard-Fi
Hurt. Brilliant.
Some bands I've recently got into:

Alestorm

Scottish pirate-themed metal. Yahaarggg me hearties!

http://www.myspace.com/alestorm
http://www.last.fm/music/Alestorm

Best songs: Captain Morgan's Revenge, Over The Seas, Set Sail & Conquer

Hospital Of Death

Funny, overblown power-thrash. The entire album is up to download for free from both their last.fm and myspace sites.

Best songs: Deathshed, Eyezerbeams Of Osiris, Fear The Ambulance

The Sorrow

Austrian metalcore. Goes against my usual rule of 'no bands that begin with 'The'', but these guys really break that rule well.

http://www.myspace.com/thesorrowmetal
http://www.last.fm/music/The+Sorrow

Best songs: A Dagger Thrust, Death From A Lover's Hands

Symphony X

Power metal. Still has the symphonic parts and soaring vocals of most power-metal, however the singer's voice is more gravelly than most PM singers, and some of the riffs wouldn't be out of place in a Pantera song.

http://www.last.fm/music/Symphony+X

Best songs: Set The World On Fire, Serpent's Kiss, Eve Of Seduction

Arnocorps

Funny, punk-tinged metal. Although they insist their songs are taken from 'austrian folk tales', each of Arnocorps' songs is based on a different Arnold Schwartzenegger film, with the band dressing in combat fatigues and speaking in fake austrian accents.

http://www.last.fm/music/ArnoCorps

Best songs: Total Recall, Predator, Last Action Hero
F**k Buttons

Experimental electronica/drone/noise duo from Bristol. Seriously not to everyones tastes but I really like them

can't get the links to myspace etc as it censors them!

best track without a doubt is the amazing, euphoric Race You to my Bedroom/Spirit Rise

And of course, can't forget good old Reznor.

His latest offering which can be downloaded legally for free:

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

First I heard of them was when the MotoGP documentary, "Faster", used "Whatever Happened to My Rock 'n' Roll" in the film's intro. It's such an awesome video sequence and the song fits it so well. I don't remember much of their other stuff, though. I'll have to look them up again.

Saw 'em live a couple of months ago, and it was definitely worth it. They sounded just as great live as they did on their albums, and they have great stage presence & energy.
Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society are pretty good - if you like Ozzie then you'll like this - it's very much old school heavy metal.

SevenDust - I've been having a bit of a fest on them today - sort of alt./melodic metal, formed '92-ish.

Devildriver or In Flames are fairly similar and pretty good.

Tool or A Perfect Circle might be enjoyed if you're into your alternative rock.

Similiarly if you're into your industrial metal then Nine Inch Nails or Fear Factory.

Quote from thisnameistaken :Don't think I've ever heard anyone use a Monty Python sample before.

Certainly interesting doing a Fleetwood Mac cover to a Monty Python sample (track: Monty)
I do very much like BRMC. A bit strange but it works. Can't say I care for Hard-Fi.

Some suggestions for the OP:

Tantric - good hard hitting rock

Sugarcult - not only are they the only pop-punk band I can tolerate, they pretty good in places too

Editors - simply, good

The Trews - pretty good also (not played all that much to really have an opinion yet)

Oh yeah the Peter Green vocal. Heh. Their take on "Peaches" (last track) is interesting too.

They list Mr Scruff as an influence. He's a bit of a nutter.
Three great new electronic albums this year:

1. 2562 - Aerial

If you're familiar with the term "dubstep," you'll have a good idea of what this sounds like. If you like Burial you're almost certain to like this. Very laid back, dubby, almost club-ready but not quite.

Sample: http://hypem.com/search/2562%20morvern/1/

2. iTAL tEK - Cyclical

Also dubstep, but in a bit more of a Aphex Twin/Autechre vein. i.e., headphones and a quiet room, not a club.

Samples 1 and 2: http://hypem.com/search/ital%20tek/1/

3. Venetian Snares - Detrimentalist

Crazy-ass breakcore/d'n'b. His best record in a few years, and good through and through.

Sample 1: http://hypem.com/search/venetian%20snares%20gentleman/1/
Sample 2: http://hypem.com/search/venetian%20snares%20kyokushin/1/
if you like VS I'm guessing you have the Rossz album? If not, buy it NOW

and whilst you're at it pick up the Printf album, Chocolate Wheelchair and My Downfall

Heh, yeah. That's what I meant by "best in a few years."
Interesting thread.

Probably the 'hippest' (is that still a cool word ?) label in the UK at the mo is Domino Records http://www.dominorecordco.com/ ... =artists&artistID=209 if you click on each of the pics you can hear the artist songs

@DWB, listening to some of your choices makes me think you might like this http://www.myspace.com/baikonour you might recognise the first track 'Hoku To Shin Ken' it's erm, from a car ad (ten bonus points if you know which ad)

As to the rest of the stuff already posted i'm surprised that the only one i really like is Kevs Grinny Grandad. Especially the first two tracks, utterly fantastic production, whoever did it has some talent. But it doesn't half remind me of an artist from the 80's, especial her voice. Can't for the life of me remember who it was, as she only had a couple of hits, but give me a few days and i'll have a think.
Not sure the Peaches cover works so well, although it is still a demo so needs a bit more work. Can't mess with one of the greatest bass lines of all time to much yunno.
#22 - AMB
Loaf Meat and Beethovens 6th symphony in d'major ft ice cube and 50 cent = this is how we play

I'm pretty sure it's all done in a bedroom somewhere. He does have a good ear for a mix I agree.

I should really pester them more about having a bass player (like you can have a drummer and a guitarist and no bass player - I mean really!). I can cover pretty much everything they've got tracked with my Pedal Board Of Sonic Awesomeness (+3) and they'd be fun tunes to play. I've got another thing lined up that I'm going to check out this weekend though so not sure how much time I'll have for buggering off to festivals at weekends and so on.

You could do a lot worse, might be worth a punt ? Who needs a full time job anyway ?

Got to say i've been playing the first two tracks on a loop since i posted that one above -almost an hour -, and the more i hear them the more i like it. Which i'm genuinely surprised at to be honest, as it's really not the kind of stuff i would go looking for. The second track "Monty" seems to have everything including the kitchen sink thrown at it. And a producer who can mix a song and seamlessly intertwine what sounds like something from the Indiana Jones theme to classic Fleetwood Mac and a Theremin has to be some sort of genius. Kinda reminds me of - and your really gonna hate this - kinda reminds me of a smooth chilled out version of the Go Team .

Still can't remember the name of that bird from the 80's though, but give me time

Oh, and you're still a Noob too, or so i hear...
