Pre-worn tyres
Hi,

Anyone who has ever participated in a long race on slick tyres will know that once they are worn, they do not heat as much because the tyre is thinner and the air inside cools down faster down the straights. Would it not be helpful for shorter races to get tyres that are already thinner, allowing you to not heat them as much and push harder? Eg. 5 lap races on Westhill with the XFR.

Just a thought... but I'm pretty sure this is done in real racing - the tyre thickness is optimised for each race. In F1 the Tyre manufacturers bring a completely new compound to each race for example.
We're not simulating F1

The cars we have are much lower budget racing, and I think people will use the same compound for a whole year. Tyre use is more often measured in heat cycles before wear, and if a tyre is still okay in terms of heat cycles I think you should be able to 'save' that tyre for another time - perhaps have 5 slots for saved tyres.

Then you can run part worn tyres, but only if you have previously saved part worn tyres.

That makes sense, yes - maybe for the FO8 you could do a bit more. Still the part-worn tyres should perform worse than thinner tyres even if they are the same thickness because the part-worn tyres' surface is not as even etc... I'm not quite sure how it works, but what you say makes sense.
'saving' part worn tyres is career-mode ish, which we currently have none of. You don't have to save fuel, or body shells, or anything else...

The original suggestion sounds reasonable to me, as a suggestion for consideration... though I wouldn't really care if it got implemented or not. Doesn't seem the sort of thing that would be worried about in real life, but that may mean the current tyre wear physics are not representative?

I get your point but I do think this could be a nice feature. Although not in a 'career' mode, but more in a 'race weekend' mode. Race/server admins could allocate X sets of tyres to each driver and he/she would have to do all the qualification and racing with those tyres. The state of those tyres could be saved server-side.

I think this would add one more element of realism/strategy/fun to online racing and leagues in particular.

Really not an issue once the tires finish the session (and heat cycle) they pick up a large amount of gravel from the paddock anyway, never does them any harm and it'll be worn off within a lap of the next heat cycle, same goes for the bits of rubber that cool unevenly.
It would be very beneficial to league races. particularly in the F1 2006 qualifying format. I run LFS : F1, we are currently doing the 2005 seasion, but once we start 2006, man, your going to need a good qualifying setup to get pole. It's ture, most of you may not try to simulate F1 or a more professional sport. But for those of us who are, it is very beneficial. Not to mention, you could add an extra dimension of immersion to this game. Where it is used or not, it should be added. It is apart of racing.

My fear with going to worn tires and adding other elements of stratergy is that LFS may loose its appeal if they detract from the racing in public servers, so long as these features are kept to leagues they should be fine.
