Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the majority of video on the web in Adobe's flash format?
Personally I have two types of video archives, the box's upon box's of HD film, and the low-res flash music video I like to keep on my mobile mem card, which always comes in handy if the party/meeting i'm at has a PC and a stereo

This is where I can't understand why mobiles need 3GP, is it a legal niche they have us trapped in, or will my mobile(non windows mobile)simply just not accept anything other than 3GP and MPEG4?

If anyone around here that knows a bit about the technical workings of video formats please explain why flv isn't standard across the board?

I'll add a pole, may as well
mp4 is one of the best compressed video format, 3gp isn't so good, but it's good for sending a video in mms, and flv isn't a video a format, it's a flash file so you can't edit those videos in movie editors, and you can't play them in original video players only in internet browsers
i think the flv(flash) video record format is death idea, mp4 is perfect for everything, or avi(my lg viewty can record in divx format)

oh, and refresh the poll with mp4 format because there are mp4 record "every" new phones

I have about 100 or so songs.flv files in my music folder totalling 750.52mb and mirrored on my mobile mem card. I have no want to edit them as they are music videos. MPEG-4 is in essence the same as 3gp because it's not Flash(most common used format available).

Yes but not everyone only has music video's on their phone.

Some people like to record video's of outings or friends or races, or just generally anything. And some people would want to edit some of these videos together or to add music to the video's ect ect.

I get the bus from Dublin to Donegal(5 hrs or so)and I shure would like to play my embedded Youtube Video Player music vids on my phone.

To clear any doubts about legal issues, I understand Youtube's term and conditions to say that the videos can become 'mobile' in this case only using the Embeddable Player to show YouTube videos on an ad-enabled blog or website, provided the primary purpose of using the Embeddable Player is not to gain advertising revenue or compete with YouTube;.

Basicly their happy as they've got advertisement through the medium it's player

I bet the mobile providers would be delighted if this was to happen

I dont think thats quite what i meant.

I mean if phone companies were to start making phones that took video's in .flv then the videos would be encoded in that format and your stuffed then, you cant do anything besides view it on your phone, and view it in a web browser, you cant edit it or anything.

But if you mean that phones would bassicly have support for .flv instead of .3gp

Well then same point as mentioned above, the video would have to be encoded in .flv format and not .3gp
and if it wasnt then that means you would have a file that was .3gp on a phone that only watches .flv.

Although you can swap .3gp for any other format that phones use, i read .mp4 somewhere i think, but i only say .3gp because thats what my phone uses.

P.S download music videos and convert them, TADAAA you can now watch music videos on your phone

sorry, yes I meant if phones where to basically support both 3GP and .flv

I agree MPEG-4 and 3GP are useful and will remain the standards of personal videos and media as it's easly editable.
.flv is a solid format for music videos as it guarantees integrity of the video to the provider.
Youtube video players to be specific in my case. When I visit Youtube from my mobile device my provider charges me for the videos I watch in my playlist, however, if I had a playable cach of my playlist

P.S converting has to illegal in some ways and it takes too much effort.

I have a solution for you.

http://coreplayer.com

The heart in this player is absolutely the best you can get for Symbian and I doubt there's anything better in Windows Mobile. But unfortunately the user interface isn't top notch really, but at least it has plenty of functions

This looks very probable.

Quote :Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded Edition

At the heart of the Ubuntu project lies a belief that open source software and technology can play a key role in enabling individuals to achieve their potential. A central goal has been the creation of a world-class, free and open source operating system that we have worked to make accessible across notebooks, desktops, thin clients and servers.

Three years on, it is clear that new types of device - small, handheld, graphical tablets which are Internet-enabled are going to change the way we communicate and collaborate. These devices place new demands on open source software and require innovative graphical interfaces, improved power management and better responsiveness.

Intel, specifically, have announced a new low-power processor and chipset architecture which will be designed to allow full internet use on these mobile Internet devices.

That's not a phone thing. More like a Mobile Internet Device, which all cost a fortune and are much bigger than phones.
