Nerves or Travel? Sickness.
Hi,

Strange topic from me today - I had my first day of College today which didn't go as well as I planned. I got two busses there, one about 30 minutes and the other 5 minutes. I felt sick after the first one but thought that was just nerves and carried on as usual. Got to college fine - got into the course room i'm taking and talked to a few people.

We started a tour of the college, i literally got just out of the door and almost erupted in sickness - managed to hold it in and get to the toilets in time to empty me.

Felt better after that, went back and finished the tour which was another 15 minutes walking around. Got back to the room and waited for the tutors to get back when I was sick again.

I spoke to my tutor who said it might be nerves or it might be the bus travel. I've been carsick for quite a while now - only every been physically sick from it once though. On the other hand, I've never been sick from nerves before although i'm quite a nervous person. It was suggested that I went home so my Dad came and picked me up at about 11.

Anyone been through something similar on a first day of something? If it is nerves its going to get a lot harder the more i'm ill from it as the effect will sort of snowball.

Any help would be appreciated,
Cheers!

I had a banana and some grapes on the morning - after my visits to the toilet you could tell I had eaten banana, if you know what I mean.

Well if I ate a banana then I'd be sick, but I think that's just me....
Nice, thanks for that

It's possible it was the combination of both travel sickness and nerves. Obviously if you'd been looking at books or something on the buses then travel sickness could be made worse, and add to that nerves about starting something new and you could have a problem.

That's also not much of a breakfast. There's no lasting carbohydrates in there, so while fruit will give you a quick burst of sugar (grapes especially), there's nothing in there for your body to work off. And a lot of sugar on an empty stomach could add to the nausea.
Line your stomach, you want fibre. Mmmm, fibre
If you think it might be the bus, try sitting close to the front. The bouncy rear suspension is what makes people feel sick (it's also why people are often sick when making boat trips on rough seas - it's the constant up and down motion that does it).

I had some of those travel bands that seem to work for me - tested them at the weekend with the same route but in a car so its maybe the bus thats more bumpy. I wasn't reading or anything, looking out of the window most of the time.

I've never really been a breakfast person when i've had to get up early and go somewhere. I always feel ill when I wake up so I don't really feel like eating anything.

EDIT:

Just seen your post Kev - We were sat 2 rows from the back of the bus - might be an explanation. To find out if it is the bus my dad has agreed to take me in the car for the rest of the week - will see how that goes.

Not only is it the up and down effect, it's the eyes and brain getting confused, the eyes telling you that your not moving (if you're looking inside the bus/car/whatever) but your brain thinks/knows you're moving, so the conflict makes you feel bad. So if you feel sick while travelling look out of the window and you shouldn't feel as bad.

I know just after I started Uni I used to get headaches and feel sick during/after the drive home. I put it down to sitting in the smog and traffic fumes for an hour and a half, which I just wasn't used to at the time.
I'm not a breakfast person, either, and on busy days it's not uncommon for me to feel a little nauseated. Try eating something small that has some fiber in it. Don't eat a lot if you feel you can't, but just something. Sit at the front of the bus, too, as suggested.

Hopefully you get it sorted. I hate feeling like crap.

I really hate it too - ruins my day and in this case my first day of college.

I'll try and eat something with fibre in it to see if that helps.

Oh poor you I get nervous/anxious from time to time especially if I'm waiting for somethign really important that might all go tits up, it's really not pleasant the feelings you get. I totally empathise with you

Oh I know that one. I once had to re-string a guitar* in the passenger seat of a car on the way to a gig - cue lots of staring into the footwell while the car is driven around roundabouts. By the time we got to the venue I had to have someone else carry my gear in while I sat down until my head stopped spinning.

* To make matters worse it was a Les Paul. They've got a two-piece bridge arrangement where the string retaining bar and individual string saddles are only held on by the tension of the strings themselves, so trying to put a fresh set of strings on while it's standing up in the front seat of a car means lots of fishing around on the floor for important pieces each time you go over a bump.
I've had a few first day nightmares over the years, though back when I was being edukated I think the worst days where a few days in when I got into fights, at one school some boy stepped on my hand whilst I was sat on the floor, so I stood up and beat him to a pulp. He left the school, though he had been popular so I never had many friends at that school thereafter.

Next school I went to I got in a fight on the second day with the bully from the year above who decided he didnt like his lunch so he's throw it on someone from behind. I didnt take too kindly being that someone, and, well, let's just say I got respect from that crowd thereafter - though I didnt win.

Actually at that school I got in a fight with a kid 4 years higher who didnt like my brother and wanted to lay the law down with me and told me he was going to make my school life hell, this was on the induction day (when you walk around and see the place before even starting), I just smacked him one, then when he tried to retaliate I hit him a few more times, and I gather that kid then got so much bullying for being beaten up by little me that he left the school before I joined!

I'm not sure any of this is useful to you though but that be my new school blues... I went to a few schools (not suprisingly I never lasted long) before finaly being expelled for truancy, so maybe i'm not the best person to ask how to handle being eddewkated.

Bananas are high in fibre.

Thats what I had this morning and what I saw again at lunch - however I can't blame the banana for it all its just what I happened to eat.

I'll let you guys know how tomorow goes - i've set myself a goal of at least staying for the whole day this time.
