The online racing simulator
longer races - wear / throttle cut blip - up/downshift
Hi,

im kinda new to LFS
and i just did my first "longer" race
which i was winning untill something in my car broke down and my laps began to be slower o_o

im still not sure what excactly broke (i think its my engine) and have no clue what i was doing wrong

heres a link to the mpr (my ign = menTaL):
http://files.mlbox.be/1hrace.mpr
it starts becoming noticable at around lap 13

also..
what are the effects on laptimes and engine/clutch-wear of throttle blipping on downshift and thr cut on upshift?

ps: i use mouse, manual shift, autoclutch
ps2:are there any good leagues with weekly races for beginners which i can join?

cheers

ok i havent watched your replay, but most of the times people overrev the engine while downshifting, so it damages your engine and makes you go slower
Your engine was damaged due to overrevving. Slightly simplified, every time your revs go into the red part of the tacho your engine takes damage.

Since the cars have a rev limiter installed, this only happens by downshifting too early and/or too fast when braking for a corner. This behaviour is quite common on public races, because you don't notice the damage when you only drive 5-10 laps, but as you experienced yourself it does indeed matter on long races.

Try timing your downshifts better (=slower) to prevent overrevving. If necessary, add a little brake force to make up for the lost engine brake effect due to downshifting less quickly.
ok thanks

I'd say that blipping on downshift could make you slightly faster. It makes the car more stable when you brake, and from what I've seen, it can shorten the braking distance (sometimes). Engine wear shouldn't be much of an issue, as long as you're not going a long way into the red line when you blip.

Throttle cut is needed if you want to minimise clutch heat. Some cars, you can get away without it although heat may build up after a long period of racing. With some cars, flat shifting is a certain death, and the clutch will begin to heat almost instantly.

There is the LFS Beginner's Cup... races are every two weeks, but it's still good fun

We're half-way through the season, but there's still fun to be had, and we're always looking for competitors
thanks ill give it a look

whats the effect of an overheated clutch btw?

that it will slip, and you cant drive
The hotter it gets, the less torque it will be able to transfer. If you extremely overheat it you won't be able to move the car anymore, as too little torque is transmitted from the engine to the wheels. A slightly overheated clutch doesn't have a big effect on laptime, though. The first thing you'll notice when it gets hotter is the revs needing longer to drop down after a shift.

u just made me doubt about what went wrong in the race again >_<
i didnt throttle cut on upshift as far as i remember
hard to see in the mpr
and i didnt have a WHOLE lot of "popcorn"-sounds coming from the engine
No, I did look at the MPR and your clutch wasn't overheating. Your engine was broken, which can also be noticed by the slight popping noise it makes under acceleration.
yea i just noticed the CT thing in F9
thanks again
uh oh hes buzzed it, atleast you found out now and not in IGTC like i did...
