Quote from chanoman315 :at what speed do they travel if they go around a tunnel of 27-28 km in 2months

You don't understand.

The protons go around the 27km loop 11000 times a second, however today they just fired one around in one direction, stopped it. Then fired one round in the other direction. Just to check it all works in both directions and stuff.

At full speed when they collide the protons will be doing 99.99% of the speed of light.
Quote from chanoman315 :that's 300000000m/s?

And if they are going same way, how they are going to crash?

They havnt started testing the collisions yet

And yes, that figure is correct.
Quote from Jakg :A speed so that they can go round the 27km track 1,100 times a second...

1,782,000kph (1,107,283.46mph)
i think that one is gonna get upset at being beaten, go on oppo and be auto-spectated!

On a serious note, 99.9% the speed of light. Surely all light already travels at the speed of light? I guess the trick is getting the atom things to go along the beam of light at that speed, but, if they can manage 99.99%, surely they can muster another 0.001% and get to the exact speed of light.

I see... so they are going one on wrong way and the other doesnt.
I can't wait for all of this to blow over, only for it to be revived again in late october when they actually do the first experiment

Nothing but light can travel at the speed of light.
A bicycle can travel at the speed of light. We've all probably done it.

And a particle (photon) is only an aspect of the wave-particle duality that we think makes up light.
Light can only travel at the speed of light because it has no mass. As soon as you start adding mass you introduce relativistic effects. The faster matter travels, the heavier it gets (yes really. This has been tested) and so the more energy you need to accelerate it. As you approach the speed of light, the energy needed to accelerate the matter approaches infinity, so only something with zero mass to begin with can actually ever achieve it.

This is why a small track will accelerate things to 99.9999% of the speed of light, but to get only a few fractions of a percent more takes apparatus 27km long.
I'm learning!

relativistic effects apply to photons as well which is why they have mass and thus are able to cary energy and speed up or slow down things if they crash into them
Quote from Becky Rose :I mades a you tube about it

People are being daft and are already putting stupid comments about a topic that they have NO comprension of. i have set them straight though. Clarkey1984, thats me mate!
heh, thanks. People are what they are though, i'm not too fussed what people make of me if I was I wouldnt have had my hair done like this! I figure at least now I know what people are staring at!

It's meant to be a sort of bad science thing more than an actual explanation, so for the guy that didnt get it he can at least sleep well at night knowing he set me straight on you tube today!

Anyways, nows you got a lil' taste what i'm like in person heh. Yup, i'm really that nuts.
you seemed like a geeky scientist (no offense) explaining that becky
Im nuts too becky, i race old cars around a mud track with the aim of hitting the opponents as hard as possible, but thats banger racing!
Heh, the vid taught me more about it then Wikipedia's scientists ever could. Good vid
I <3 the moth.
O MG

Becky, you're like, so famous

Why do all the theories with Q in them not take into account string theory's mathematics and be purely based on the observation of the tree?

E;
lmao!

LHC Live Part 6:

"and yes, i've just heard we have extracted a synchronized dump"

???lol
Imminent death.

I laughed so hard at the video xD
I'm guessing it didn't make a black hole. Yay we're alive.
Bah, I went to practice.

My hopes are still high though, there's 8 months left of practice for them to destroy.
