Just wondering. Anyone buyin' PS3? I won't it's $700 and takes 3 years to make a game disk.illepall Designers pushed the production to November from May. It's $700 because it's completely HD. And the makers will send updated versions of the games. Now games are ONLY $150.illepall What do they want from us?
No serious. I don't see a reason to buy all this fancy hardware. The money stays on my bank account until they can show me a product that's not just good, but actually worth the money.
At £85 a game they've got to be taking the piss, would quickly make it more expensive than buying a computer that could do everything and a load of more useful things than playing games with slightly less flashy graphics.
I think Sony make very high quality products (hi-fis, laptops, TFT monitors and TVs) but the Playstation always seems a bit out of placed and tacky in the Sony range although the price tag is very much in line with company policy.
Dont believe everything you read in the newspaper, there's no way that games will retail at $150, it's just not gonna happen. Sony are talking about a software delivery system akin to Valve softwares steam application, which will allow you to download games directly to your hard drive and cut costs significantly.
I can believe that the console may cost in the region of $700 purely because of the totally unneccessary blu-ray drive. As for it being completely HD, anything that can display a resolution of 1280x720 or above can be classed as HD. Games taking 3 years to develop, again, more hype, you can't put a time scale like that on a project like making a game, it's like saying every movie takes 3 years to make. Unless you're saying it actually takes 3 years to make a game disk in which case that must be one hell of a slow blu-ray burner they got
I remember the original neo-geo being around in sweden ~10 years ago with games retailing at around $180.
I'd guess sony is aiming the PS3 at a wide market, and will fit prices to this eventually, and games taking 3 years to develop is ofcourse obvious bs. especially with so many games these days building on an identical base/engine, like cars.
I'll stick to my original xbox, throw a chip in one of these and they'll do wonderful things without involving xbox games of any kind.
Most of the sites around if you search are expecting a release price of around £400, which is pretty standard actually. Anyone recall the release price of the XBox360 off-hand? I think it was around £350-400.
£210 for the core and £280 for the premium, Microsoft are selling them at heavy loss though, but they make up for it through accessories and games though.
I was looking at my gamepro and they said that the ps3 will cost $250 - $500. Games cost prolly 70-80 bucks. Sony will actually lose money per system b/c of bluray. Microsoft lost $100 bucks per system though. Just wanted to share that with u
However expensive consoles and the games are, I still think they are NOT worth it. They are purely a quick form of entertainment that become obsolete in a year's time. Not only that, but they are a money pit if you become addicted. Then worthless later on, as you find yourself not using it, or something new has come out.
For the money that you could spend on ALL that console stuff, you could build yourself a decent PC which should easily last years longer until you need to update it or buy a new one.
I don't see the fun in console games anyways. They are great for some quick error-free gaming and entertainment, but the style of games that are popular these days are not even playable on consoles, it is stupid. For example, FPS games, you can be ten times better in an FPS on a PC with mouse. Of course, you can buy a mouse for your console (some have this I think), but still it is stupid to sit there infront of a TV with a mouse and keyboard... let alone pay for those dumb accessories. Consoles are for kids, and the games are usually made for kids. If you really want something that is flexible and has the most popular games, buy a PC!
They are made to last physically, but not in terms of technology.
I had a few consoles (stopped at the PS2), and my friend is really into them. Has had several Xboxes, Dreamcast, PS2, etc... and mods most of them. And in his case, he is living on his own, and trying to make ends meet. Last time I visited him he went on a spending spree for all kinds of gadgets and games... and the games were a complete waste of money. That is another thing, you practically have the chance of getting a not-so-great game.
But whatever, you guys can love your console(s), I don't like em as much as I used to
I'll probably just wait untill the price drops, because now I think I bought my ps2 a bit too early, just a while after it was only half the price. Maybe you could even wait for the miniature version of the ps3, if they'll ever do that, and then you only have to pay half of it's original value. I want the ps3, but I'm gonna wait a bit longer this time. And about you can better build a pc, well, a week or so and the pc will already be just a bit outdated, you won't have that problem with a console. Consoles develop quite lineair with each other, computers don't. If there is a new graphics card, you should have to buy it to have complete benefit of your computer. You can't do that with consoles, they'll last for 3-4 years mostly, without games getting to heavy for it.
As for game development time, games were taking 3 years to develop, well, years ago, I think Doom 3 took 4 or 5 or some equally silly, I can't see why the platform should make much of an impact on times.
The point is it's a super silly hype thing, PS3 will probably see games developed in anything from a month to "Duke Nukem Forever", Doom 3 was also a rewrite/new engine i think? If it takes a software studio 3 years to make the next Puzzle Bobble / Bust-A-Move, something's wrong.
3 years is a resonable time-frame for a "from scratch"-game nowadays. If you're just turning a "2005" into "2006" then 3 years is naturally too much (72 hours day? ), but making a game from scratch does take such amounts of time.
Not to forget, making something like Doom 3 for PC, you will have to do optimizations for many different hardware vendors (graphics cards, sound cards etc etc) and that WILL take time. That isn't the issue on consoles, all they have to do is optimize the game for one hardware setup (or two, if they decide to release it on other consoles).
I have nothing against Sony, I have huge respect on the work they did on the PS2, as it STILL is a very good platform for many good games (GT4 & Enthusia). And how old is the PS2? It's SIX years old, yep, you heard me correct. S-I-X years! How much good would a average six year old top of the line PC do you these days?
While PS3 may be expensive, the console will "last" a lot longer than a average PC costing the same amount of money. I, personally, won't be buying PS3 untill the prices drop, because I rather upgrade my PC and wait for the PS3 prices to drop. But, mark my words, I will buy it one day or another.
After 6 years, SIX... I still play it once in a while, and I keep buying new games (or older, less money ) and I keep having fun with it, so I'll buy the ps3 !! (some day )
